Those beams of light are first-class; so much so we've been chowing on sunshine eats during the day and hitting up Johnny's late at night. The tingles in our fingers have seen us crafting piñatas and scrolling through the virtual arcade. With Halloween crawling up your back tomorrow remember to hit the festival of ideas and to scare yourself at 208, just try to avoid getting amnesia.

Isn't Halloween so great and also really weird? Like Hocus Pocus and Halloween H2o (<3 Jamie Curtis <3) are some of the greatest things ever to happen to humanity (like heaps better than penicillin and the French Revolution imo) and they were inspired by THE RIDICULOUS AF HOLIDAY THAT IS ALL HALLOW'S EVE. So thank u witches of Salem for getting burnt at the stake all those years ago because it now gives every person in the Western world an excuse to dress like a sexy cat and do shots that look like human blood for a weekend. Ayoooo. Here is our (not very comprehensive) guide to Halloween DIYs. Enjoy (but also be very spooked).

The true story that Pride is based on is really one worth telling, and to as many people as will listen. In 1984 a group called LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners) formed in the UK to raise money for those involved in an infamous year-long strike. While in real life there were 11 LGSM chapters throughout the country, Pride focuses on the London chapter that raised funds for Welsh miners. LGSM was formed out of solidarity, since both groups had been persecuted by police, yet the film showcases how even these good intentions and altruistic motives were met with homophobia by some small minds amongst the small town mining communities.

Make & Do is Beci's third book (following Find and Keep and Home) and it's beautiful. It isn't your average DIY book. Though the projects are simple enough in practice, the doing serves a kind of learning that you might not get anywhere else and the results are so cool (granted, my attempts might resemble when Homer tries to DIY a BBQ pit and makes abstract art but, yeah as I said, the merit is in the doing).

Not much music (or art for that matter) is willing to criticise the cyclical problems of alcoholism ingrained in footy culture like this. And it's done from a place of love for the game and a sense of humour, which makes it all the more powerful.

Jessilla Rogers' new studio space is a little hard to find. Go left down a North Melbourne side street, right into a laneway, and at a fork in the path is an unassuming old mechanic's workshed. About ten ceramicists share the sizeable space, which is mostly brick and corrugated iron and, no thanks to the kiln they all share, miserably hot in summer. Jess's studio is hardly the size of an office cubicle but needn't be much bigger as she divides her time between the shed, school (she studies ceramics at RMIT), and at North Carlton Ceramics, where she teaches a pottery class.

Every new establishment of late has jumped on the 'Little' bandwagon, maybe owners think it signifies that they're the local independent business? This time round we found a genuine place situated on the corner of Little Lefroy Lane, so it's actually legit. Little Lefroy's is a new corner box establishment in the ever-lush brunch scene of South Freo and like their cinder block bar it will firmly establish itself in your regular sunshine eats category.

National treasure tackles the up-to-the-minute world of hacking and leaks. Sounds promising, doesn't it? But for all its ambition, Peter Carey's new novel is beset by a lack of focus that runs all the way from unfinished characters right down to a muddled structure that houses stories within stories within stories.

Tucked away in downtown Canning Vale is Johnny's Burgers, known previously for serving homerun burgers out of a first-base hit venue. Broadly and commercially the retail game is over. It could just be me but it is rare for a slo-mo sequence of emotions to come from anything spotted off the shelf. The end game sees you back in front of that retina display flicking through stuff that might just do but leaves you wondering what site that guy you saw at The Bird last Friday gets his threads from – gimme options baby. New WA-based site Clique Arcade launched last Friday and is a virtual mall that aims to house most up-and-coming local designers.

Here's a guaranteed way to attain true Lord of the Lollies status this Halloween. You'll be worshipped by trick-or-treaters from far and wide when you surprise them with this cute-ass mini piñata stuffed full of candy, as opposed to those muesli bars your neighbour's trying to give out.

Perth's best radiowaves RTRFM have been getting cleverer with their gigs of late and the launch of the new Courtyard Club series is another notch in their FM signaling belt. Starting this Friday and carrying on every Friday for an eight-week stint is a series of post-work hangs at the State Theatre Centre on William Street.

Each Friday will see Drivetime being given the live broadcast spin followed by some live music sets and then RTRFM DJs laying down smooth tunes to carry you through the night. The opener will see Abbe May and Hideous Sun Demon strumming out sets followed by Holly Doll and Claire Hodgson dropping rock n' roller tracks.

The State Library and writingWA have teamed up to bring Perth Disrupted, a festival of ideas. The crew is inviting open minds down to have some contemporary thinking sessions over 24 sessions kicking off this Friday and wrapping up on Sunday. Broadly the sessions will look into democracy, game changers, languages and technology through discussion, debate, film and song.

Some of the highlights of the festival include The “C” Word, which will focus on the issue of copyright. Memory Makes Us will be a live writing battle in which writers Kate Fielding and Maxine Beneba Clarke will take their inspiration from the audience's own memories, whilst the Journalism is not Terrorism talk is a little more self explanatory from its title. Head down and get inspired.

Every speaker you've walked past lately has probably blasted some Hamjam your way. The lo-fi sounds have been abundant due to the boys recently dropping their debut EP. Even though the EP's been spinning for the last couple of weeks it's only now that the wax has come through the post. To celebrate the 10" arriving the boys are throwing another party.

Supporting Hamjam on the night will be Aborted Tortoise, Ben Witt and Kitchen People. Tunes will be spun every inch in between by Aslan and Jack Doepel.

Probably the scariest venue in Perth is 208 and this Halloween the punk rock haven is tapping into the left-of-field vein with Brisbane's Lawrence English stopping by. Lawrence is running hot off the back of his latest release Wilderness Of Mirrors out on Room40.

Support on the night will come from experimental dude Craig McElhinney and RTRFM DJ legend Oliver Laing. The Salad Boyz will also be serving up grub to keep the fire raging in your belly. Head on down for a darker than ave Halloween.

M.K.R.T Kel Briefcase Satchel

It’s increasingly difficult to find a bag big enough to fit a laptop in it that doesn’t look like it’s been designed just for laptops. Is it it too much to ask for a simple but good-looking laptop receptacle? Accessories label M.R.K.T (short for Mad Rabbit Kicking Tiger) has got it covered, supplying the computer haves and have-nots with super functional bags and briefcases that are also aesthetically pleasing.

Inspired by architecture, M.R.K.T aims to design classic, clean forms which baulk trends and are universally relevant. The materials are the stars with 100% recycled felt, vegan leather, bio-degradable canvas and waterproof resin used for an eco-friendly and tactile product that is also socially responsible. The brand’s founder, Tom Pen, is an architect and treats creating the bags in the same way he would approach a building, unifying the practical with the conceptual for a beautiful clean accessory. The Kel Briefcase Satchel is one such killer design, containing more pockets than you can shake a USB stick at and made entirely from delightful-to-touch felt. We have one Kel Briefcase Satchel to giveaway. To enter, answer the following question:

This Week's Question

M.K.R.T uses a vegan leather comprised of PU, what is PU short for?

a) Polyurethrane
b) Polly’s Undies
c) Personal Ugg boots
d) Parrot Udders
