Welcome to Issue 1 of the Research Support Newsletter

Dear colleagues, 
I am delighted to launch the first issue of our newsletter.  This email publication will be issued monthly by the Research Support Office in order to keep you up to date about research funding news, successes and current developments inside and outside of DCU. I hope you find it useful.

The Matrix Reloaded....
The implementation of the operational structures that will support staff in achieving the objectives outlined in the Research and Innovation research strategy is now in full swing.
  • The Research and Enterprise Hubs have now moved in to their new offices on the first floor on the N Building (N113). The team is now fully recruited.
  • The two units of the Science and Technology Platform are now operational: STEP Research Administration and STEP Facilities. Located in the X building and in the NICB respectively they are now in business although still recruiting.
  • The Business Innovation Platform and the Societal Impact Platform are now also up and running.

DCU Research News

DCU Horizon 2020 Successes to date DCU researchers have had significant success in the first round of H2020 funding. There have been 13 successful H2020 awards to date. Congratulations to all involved! Notably, we have just signed our first H2020 grant agreement for EUROfusion. Further details of this and all successful awards are detailed in the following article

SFI Research CentresDCU is involved in four of the five new funded SFI research centres. With funding of €250 million over the next six years these centres will support cutting-edge research, predominantly in ICT and medical device development.  See the Irish Times announcement here.

EI Commercialisation Fund Success DCU has been awarded 5 Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund Projects  with funding totaling €1.8 million. Awardees are Dr Dermot Brabazon, Dr James Carton, Prof Patrick McNally, Prof Oliver Dolly and Prof Tony Killard/ Prof Richard O'Kennedy. 

Funder Updates

Science Foundation Conference & Workshop Programme: SFI  have re-launched their Conference and Workshop (C&W) programme. The deadline for the conference category has been changed to four months in advance of the event. Applications must now be submitted online through the Sesame system.

Change to Enterprise Ireland's Horizon 2020 Financial Support Schemes1. New form and guidelines for ERC support. 2. Travel support must be submitted one month before event.

Irish Research Council - Change to eligibility criteria for GOI postdoctoral fellowship: Applicants must have either graduated or have been certified as having fulfilled all the requirements for the award of a doctoral degree, including a viva/thesis defence, within the five-year period between 28th February 2010 and 28th February 2015.

InterTradeIreland ‘Focus on Horizon 2020’ – Manufacturing and Transport Date: Tuesday, November 4, 2014 - 09:00 to 13:00,  NIACE Centre, Airport Road, Belfast, BT3 9DZ

NANOFUTURES Brokerage Event for NMPB Date: Thursday, November 13, 2014 (All day), Brussels. A brokerage event for the incoming H2020 NMBP work program is organized by the European Technology Platform NANOfutures with the collaboration of EUMAT and Manufuture.

HERA Matchmaking Event "Uses of the Past". Register by 5th November 2014. Takes place 29th January 2015 - Tallin, Estonia.The aim of the Matchmaking Event is to present the Call for transnational humanities-led research proposals under the theme “Uses of the Past” to be formally announced in January 2015 and to facilitate the building of international research partnerships.

Water - The Greatest Global Challenge. Date: November 27th and 28th. Venue: DCU Innovation Campus. This conference will benefit those who want to keep up-to-date on current water challenges from both a research and industry perspective. 

Save the date: 1st Brazil Ireland Science Week February 23rd to 26th 2015 - Dublin Castle. The conference will bring together leading scientists from Brazil and Ireland  to consider opportunities for the internationalisation of their research and develop strategies for advancing scientific collaboration in areas of key importance to both countries.

EI Horizon 2020 Innovation Vouchers Pilot SchemeThe Innovation Voucher allows Small Enterprises to explore and apply for the Horizon 2020 opportunities with the assistance of a public sector Knowledge Provider. 

European Research Council Starting Grants. Applicants must have been awarded their PhD more than 2 years and less than 7 years prior to the 1st of January 2015. If you are interested in applying, please contact Anne-Louise Holloway in the Research Support Office.

Pfizer - Investigator-Initiated Research Programme (IIR)Research Areas included: Clinical studies, epidemiology studies, novel diagnostic screening tools, In vitro or animal studies. .

Irish Research Council Schemes
New Foundations supports eligible researchers who intend to pursue research, networking and/or dissemination activities within and across the diversity of disciplines. Deadline 14th November 2014. 

2015 Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme -  deadline on 27th November 2015. The IRC funds all disciplines. This scheme supports applicants at an early stage of their postdoctoral career and can be held for either one or two years.
