Did you know ...
#1 - NMTBC is running a whole heap of events for you and your mates over the coming months - come along and have some fun. Cross Country, DH, Enduro - we've got it covered. We stage events because, above all else, people enjoy them. We do everything we can to keep entry fees low, courses inclusive and include enough categories to suit every fitness and skill level. It's about getting out there, riding your bike, having fun and meeting people. Yep - you can turn yourself inside out in the pursuit of glory if that's your thing, or you can dress like a giant smurf and ride a fat bike - whatever makes you happy. Check out the 'Upcoming events' section, or go here, and get amongst it. If you want to lend a hand with the organising that would be great - give our Events Manager Wayne Pool a shout.
#2 - Nelson City Council is doing a bit of a facelift on the Dun Mountain Trail to keep it in the condition such an iconic trail deserves and NMTBC has donated $3500 towards the project. A massive thanks to every single one of you for enabling us, via your membership money, to make this contribution. A few years ago we made a similarly sized donation towards upgrades on the Heaphy. The Council was very appreciative (there is very limited money available for it to build and manage trails - which is where we come in to help grease the wheels). Next time you ride the Dun give yourself a pat on the back.
#3 - Pipers Reserve Trail. What does Nelson have a massive shortage of? If you said grade 2 mountain bike trails you would be spot on. This is something NMTBC and the Councils are very aware of, and we are working hard to remedy it. Pipers Reserve (at the top of Emano Street) is a project that has been in development for a while, and is now close to completion. Nelson City Council has built it, via its contractor Nelmac, and NMTBC has been able to help out with materials and some technical support. The result will be a great grade 2 shared loop that can be enjoyed by riders of all ages, skills and fitness levels. It's only a start in terms of meeting our 'easy' trail needs, but it's a very good start.
#4 - NMTBC has nominated Anka Martin for the Sport Tasman Sports Person of the Year Award. Now it's up to you to make sure mountain biking takes home the prize! It's super easy - just click this link and 'like' the post. Job done.
Anka is probably the best ambassador for mountain biking we have (and that's saying a lot considering how amazing our other female athletes like Meg, Raewyn and Veronique are). Anka, as well as ripping it up on the world Enduro circuit is also responsible for bringing the worlds media to Nelson to film and do product launches. There's not many people with a Santa Cruz frame named after them either. Give up 20 seconds of your day and click the link.
#5 - we know how much you like to put things off until the last minute, but don't forget that NMTBC members get a special entry price deal for the legendary Coppermine Classic/Epic/Enduro. Get signed up here.
#6 - Round 1 of the 2014 XC series was held in Richmond last week and it was a blast. We have included a new 'recreation' category this year that is all about getting involved without feeling like you need to race hard out to be part of it. You can see the results here. The next round is in Kaiteriteri, 9 November.
#7 - we worked out recently that NMTBC members have contributed over 5000 hours to trail development and maintenance since February. Trails like Turners, Firball, Gully, IV Line and the new climbing trail (Take Me To Your Leader - TM2YL), Sharlands, 629, Peaking Ridge, Rimu and Supplejack have all had some love. Not bad at all. Thanks to everyone who has rolled their sleeves up and helped make our playground even better, without you we wouldn't have much to smile about.
#8 - argh, we are itching to tell you about two new trails we have been working through the consent process for. But we can't. Not just yet. Just know that if all goes to plan we are going to have two AMAZING long new trails to ride very soon - and they are going to be the kind of trails people fly here to ride.
#9 - it's the NMTBC AGM on 28 November. We appreciate this is about as appealing riding a fixie down Peaking Ridge - but it's an important part of club life. To make it a bit more appealing, and hopefully attract a few of you out, we are gonna go for a social ride first (probably in Sharlands so you can choose the downhill trail you like best), followed up with some food and a brief chat about what we have been up to, and what we are going to be getting up to.
If you are interested in a role on the committee for next year we are on the look-out for a committed individual with some time to dedicate to helping Wayne Pool manage our events. We meet monthly and, with a membership of over 1000, we have a bit of process stuff to look after as well. If you are keen to get involved and be part of NMTBC's development send a short email to chair@nelsonmtb.club
See you out there!
