Hello again...

I hope this email finds you doing well.

It's been a while since the last newsletter, and I mean a LONG time.

Apologies for that - I took a full-time lecturing post down south that pulled me off the map for a bit.

But things are much better this year and I'm now lecturing at the University of Surrey with excellent students and colleagues and also contributing to the new BA PACE degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama which I love.

So good things.

And despite doing two (actually 3) '1st year in post' lecturing jobs back to back (i.e. creating/delivering new content), surprisingly, music and art haven't slowed down much either.

Here are a few recent events:

With Air Field, I recently performed in London with Ian Spink and Alan Paterson at Siobhan Davies' What Remains Festival. You can view an early edit of the performance here: https://vimeo.com/167609097

I also wrote a new work for Organ and Electronics, Beneath the Darkening Sea, which I've just properly recorded at Union Chapel. I'm hoping to have it mastered by the end of the summer but until then you can listen to a live recording of the premiere here: https://soundcloud.com/billthompson/beneath-the-darkening-sea-live-recording

I've also been collaborating with composer James Weeks and poet James Wilkes on an intriguing project investigating Josquin de Prez suitably named - Otherwise Josquin. No recordings to share yet but we have another concert at Kings Place, London later this year if you're interested.

And finally I've been collaborating with Saffy Satohy on a new dance/sound installation/public art work called Light Field involving the sound of light, kinetically powered lanterns, and movement. I'm also working on a solo live electronic work using only the sound of light that will premiere soon.

You may also have noticed the long overdue rebuild of my site www.billthompson.org. Still lots to finish, but overall I'm much happier with this one - let me know what you think.

There's lots more but I'll leave the rest for later.

Stay tuned.

Something else

As I mentioned previously, I've been working on a composition made exclusively with light-based sound.

Some of you may remember, however, that this isn't the first time I've used light as a sound source.

The photo above is from my solo exhibition, Cra/cked, where I explored this idea in a 17 TV sound and video installation.

There are several videos of the exhibition available here for you to watch if you're interested:

In live performance, I use similar techniques to create sounds and interfere with radio and TV signals which I then feed back into my set.

There are a couple of short teaser clips of this here:

I'll be performing this a few times this year (on June 28th in Catstrand, July 3rd at Goldsmiths in London, and October 22/23 in Aberdeen), and if all goes as planned, release it sometime in the fall.

I'm considering the idea of pressing this to clear vinyl - any thoughts? Interest?

For this newsletter's recommendation I suggest, actually, insist you have a listen to the recent release on Touch Records by Claire M Singer.

It's a culmination of 14 years work resulting in a stunning double-CD of experimental organ, cello and electronic composition that is already garnering rave reviews across websites and blogs (it was only released yesterday!)

Beautiful, lush, organic, textured - and even melodic - I think it's going to be one of those records that people talk about and share with each other for a long, long time.

Trust me, if you love music, you'll love this: Solas

Stay in Touch

That's it for this newsletter.

I'll let you know about any further events UK or elsewhere (there's a chance I'll be performing in Austin this year sometime in September and then again in November).

In the meantime, and as always, if you want to stay in touch between posts or share something interesting (an upcoming performance or recent release), you can always reach me at the links below:
