The prophet Hosea was instructed by the Lord to take a sinful woman as wife. The Lord explained to Hosea that this was a sign of the union that He was to make with His people, saying:

“And I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you shall know the LORD.” (Hos. 2:19-20)

Jesus inaugurated his public ministry at a banquet to which he and his disciples had been invited. So also we learn from Jesus that the Kingdom of God is a banquet. Matthew’s Gospel is more specific: it is a wedding banquet, given by a king for his son.
God is the King, and He is preparing a marriage feast. But the ones invited to the feast have declined, and they are losing their place to others. Jesus’ hearers, including the chief priests and Pharisees, could not possibly have missed the point. The Kingdom is to be taken away from them and given to “the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame,” not to mention the prostitutes and tax collectors.

Jesus is the King’s Son. He is the fulfillment of the prophesy made through Hosea. He is taking to himself the poor and the lost, purifying and sanctifying them, and weaving for them the garment of charity in which he wishes them to appear at the Great Feast at the end of time.

Saint Dominic, clothed in heavenly robes, intercede for us, that we may be found clothed in the same robes before the throne of the Lamb!
