Inclusive Theatre Troupe + Celebrating After-School Programs

Celebrating Our After-School Programs on Oct. 23

On October 23, the Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation Extended School Enrichment (ESE) program will be among more than 1 million people in communities across the nation and at U.S. military installations worldwide joining a national rally for afterschool programs. Sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance and now in its 15th year, Lights On Afterschool brings communities together for science fairs, fun runs, community service events, music and dance performances, open houses and other events at schools, community centers, malls, parks and recreation centers, science museums, state capitols, and other settings.

Nearly 2,000 students are currently enrolled in ESE, more than an 85 percent growth in enrollment since the program launched in 2006.

While 123,163 Hoosier children are currently enrolled in afterschool programs, more than 220,000 Indiana students are without adult supervision in the afternoons. The parents of 308,914 Indiana children not already in an afterschool program say they would enroll their child if a program were available.

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation Launches Inclusive Theatre Troupe

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) is launching a first-of-its-kind-in-Central-Indiana inclusive playback troupe called “The Roundabout Playback Troupe.” This form of theatre that includes both those with and without intellectual disabilities involves members of the audience relating stories and the troupe “playing it back” by acting it out.

Auditions for The Roundabout Playback Troupe are set for December 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. with audition sessions lasting 10 minutes each. Those auditioning can prepare a one-minute monologue, song, reading, or poem. There will be an interactive portion of the tryout as well. “We are looking for actors and musicians who are good listeners and enjoy interacting with others,” Yadon says. The troupe’s first performance is slated for March 2015.
