I've had a plethora of conversations about last Sunday's service and sermon.  I was passionately honest, with the intent to encourage conversation and personal reflection, not for everyone to think like me.  Often we don't go far enough in our faith...in terms of how it motivates and shapes the ways in which we see the world and the ethical choices we make.  Or we talk about it in a vague, non-offensive way, so as not to hurt anyone's feelings.  Or we don't say anything, because we ourselves are unsure what we think and/or believe.

One of the traits I love about CAPC is the genuine desire so many members of our community have to articulate, live and incarnate our faith in all that we may do, say and be.  This coming Sunday is the "sequel" or part two of last weeks sermon, as we talk about what it means to be saved by the blood of Jesus and how that shapes us today and in the days to come.  I hope you'll be there to be part of the conversation.

Hoping to see you Sunday or before,

Monte will be preaching on
What we talk about when we talk about being saved by the blood of Jesus
We'll wrestle with this vast subject starting
from the following scripture,

Rockridge Halloween Parade
Sunday, October 26
12-2pm

We start with worship
in costume (if you like)
at 10:30am!

This annual neighborhood celebration festival
along College Avenue on the last Sunday of October.

Our church garden "aka Rockridge Park" serves as both the  beginning and ending point for the parade.  It's also where where the local library branch sets up a harvest-themed story-telling area.  In the past we've past out candy as a way to connect with other people who may not know our community first-hand.  This is a unique chance to engage with families - many of whom have little to no church experience - in a fun, friendly, non-threatning way.
Monte needs help doing this.

If you're interested, contact Monte! [direct email link]

Come to church in a costume that day - wether you're a child or an adult.

November Book Club News
November 18, 12-1pm

We're  reading and discussing
Falling Upwards.  A Spirituality for the Two-Halves of Life,
by Richard Rohr
You may be able to find that book in the Oakland library,
as it has been a big seller!

Monte needs your help!

We've had several construction signs left on the sidewalk in front of the church.  Monte has called repeatedly over the past 2 weeks and still they have not been picked up.  Will you take a few minutes of your time to call and request that the signs be picked up in front of the church at the intersection of College Ave and Harwood?  Inundating the construction office with calls may be the way to make it actually happen.  Call Bosas Brothers at (510) 534-4077 and ask for the signs to be picked.  Thank you for your help!

Talking about the Measures in the next Election @ CAPC
 Sunday, October 26th  after worship

On Weds November 12, 6:30 - 8:00 PM, School Board Representative Jody London (District 1) is hosting a Community Meeting with new OUSD Superintendent Antwan Wilson.  People also can enroll in Covered California (health insurance) starting at 6 P.M. This event will be at Chabot Elementary School, Multi-Purpose Room, 6686 Chabot Road.

Online Rockridge District Survey

The purpose of the survey is to discover what Rockridge residents want our neighborhood to be -- today, as well as 20+ years in the future. The scope of this discussion is broad, and, we hope, will identify common thinking as well as diverse perspectives related to...
  1. Current/future retail and commercial development
  2. Public and pedestrian safety
  3. Schools
  4. Services available in the community
  5. Management of public space
  6. Community activities (festivals, events, etc.)

Monte gets multiple links each week to online articles
about Church, Culture and Society.
Instead of saving them or sharing them only on Facebook,
I'm trying to do also do so through
our e-newsletter for those who are interested.
Here are some of the best ones I've seen this week.

Our Deacon's Ministry Team met this past Sunday and began work on the Annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner that we serve on Thanksgiving Day.  We are in need of some people to fill three key roles in order to make this annual event happen in 2014.  Take a look at the roles, and contact the Deacons or Monte if you're interested, or know of someone who might be good in that role.

1. Supervisor/Chief Chef,
who will lead and supervise cooking, serving and cleanup on the 3 evenings prior to Thanksgiving and all day on Thanksgiving.  This is a paid position, with a stipend of $500 (all to be paid upon conclusion of services, which services include staying on the premises until all cleanup is done on Thanksgiving Day and the facility is closed and locked).

2.  Food and Supplies Purchaser.
This person is the key buyer of all Thanksgiving food, decorations, tablecloths, plates, plastic silverware, etc., and will work together with the Supervisor/Chief Chef.  All expenses will be reimbursed from the Deacons' Thanksgiving Fund, but this is an unpaid (volunteer) position.  This person will likely do most of the shopping and delivery to the church (with assistance, hopefully) the weekend before Thanksgiving, including purchasing and supplying Turkeys to church volunteers, on the
Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, who will cook the Turkeys at home and bring them sliced on Thanksgiving.  This person will be on call during the week prior to Thanksgiving to provide additional food and supplies as necessary, and to buy any required fresh produce, whipped cream, coffee creamer, and Pumpkin Pies closer to Thanksgiving Day.

3.  Decorations Supervisor.
This person will make sure there are adequate supplies to decorate and prepare the gym for the Thanksgiving Day Meal and arrive by
6:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day to supervise the installation of decorations and set up of the gym.  This is an unpaid (volunteer) position.

Education :: Faith is a process not just an event

Are you looking for ways to grow in faith or to wrestle with life in community?  Faith can't be lived in a vacuum.  Like embers in a fire, it's in community - life together - that we become alive and shine.  Here are some ways you might find a place and space to grow with others:

Sunday mornings

Reading through the Bible
Thursdays at 11:30am in the Library.
Ever read through the Bible or wanted to discover what it says?  Here's your chance.  The group always goes for lunch along the avenue afterwards.

Godly Play
During worship each Sunday at 10:30am. We invite our children and families to worship as a full inter-generational community on our more kid-friendly 1st Sundays of the month.
