2015 APSA Africa Workship: Call for Proposals

Workshop Leaders for the 2015 APSA Africa Workshop
Deadline: 5:00 PM ET, November 9, 2014

The American Political Science Association (APSA) is pleased to announce a call for proposals from political scientists interested in serving as co-leaders for the 8th annual APSA Africa Workshop. This two-week political science workshop will take place in July 2015.

Background

Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the 2015 workshop will conclude an eight-year effort to support political science research and teaching in Sub-Saharan Africa through a series of residential political science workshops. Along with APSA’s MENA Workshops program, the Africa Workshops are a major component of APSA’s efforts to engage with political science communities outside the United States and support research networks linking U.S.-based scholars with their colleagues overseas. Previous workshops have been held in Maputo, Mozambique (2014); Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (2013); Gaborone, Botswana (2012); Nairobi, Kenya (2011); Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (2010); Accra, Ghana (2009); and Dakar, Senegal (2008). More information about the workshops can be found at the project web site: http://community.apsanet.org/Africa/Home/.

Each workshop is led by a team of two US-based and two Africa-based scholars. The two-week program is hosted by a university or research institute in Africa and brings together up to 22 Africa-based scholars, as well as four advanced PhD students from US universities.

The goals of the workshops are to: (1) enhance the capacities and resources for theoretical or empirical scholarship by political scientists in Africa; (2) explore a compelling intellectual theme underpinning basic research in political science; (3) provide a forum for connecting participants with recent developments in the field; and (4) support participants’ ongoing research and publication.

The proposal must explain the scope of the professional ties between prospective US and Africa-based workshop leaders; preference will be given to teams demonstrating substantial previous scholarly collaboration. Workshop leaders will serve as academic directors of the project who will be responsible for all substantive content.

A modest honorarium will be provided and related expenses (meals, airfare, lodging, incidentals) will be covered. Workshop administration and logistics will be led by APSA staff in conjunction with the local partners in Africa.

Applicants should explain and justify where they would like to implement the workshop and with which host organization and local partners. Local partner organizations will be expected to work closely with APSA on all related administrative and logistical tasks. Partners must have the institutional capacity and ability to support a successful residential workshop, including close linkages to local institutions of higher education and research communities. Applicants are strongly encouraged to recommend local partner organizations only if they have existing relationships or know them well.

Applications Workshop proposals should be submitted jointly by two US-based APSA members who are interested in co-leading the summer 2015 workshop, and should be written in three sections:

Africa Conference-development, urban space, and human rights in Africa

The University of Texas at Austin
April 3-5, 2015
Deadline: November 20, 2014

Development, which has always been intertwined with human rights, is increasingly linked to the fate of urban spaces and urban livelihoods. Questions about poverty, economic growth, quality of life, social inequality, human rights and citizenship are framed through the lens of urban planning and development policies. Whether indigenously derived or externally influenced/imposed, development strategies for Africa are based on visions of alternative futures that seek to redefine social relations and spatial organization both within the continent and abroad. The social, political, and cultural landscapes envisioned and created under the context of development highlight the historic and ongoing challenges that frame efforts to transform Africa’s development trajectory. The goal of this year’s conference is to generate interdisciplinary insights that can interrogate development paradigms and intervention practices as they relate to urban space and human rights in Africa.
What does development mean in the context of indigenous strategies of self-determination and global intervention? How do notions of development shape urban space and urban policies in Africa? In what ways have development strategies affected human rights? How is development conceptualized, and how does this advance or foreclose intervention practices? How can development related issues be conceptualized in contexts of vulnerability and crises that arise across urban, government, or individual levels? In what ways do individual voices inform collective strategies that address development, and how do these voices support or contradict dominant/external development goals? How do indigenous collectives and global activists define human rights and urban rights, and how can these definitions shift notions of development?

Please submit all abstracts to africaconference2015@gmail.com and Toyin Falo-la: toyinfalola@austin.utexas.edu by November 30, 2014. Proposals should include a 250-word abstract and title, as well as the author's name, address, telephone number, email address, and institutional affiliation.

Pursuing Justice in Africa Conference
University of Cambridge

March 27-28, 2015
Submission Deadline: November 28, 2014

In recent decades, justice has been overshadowed as a subject of concern to scholars of Africa by vast literature centering on rights, crime, punishment, policing and social order. This neglect of justice is striking given the increasing presence of international justice institutions, such as the International Criminal Court, on the African continent and the remarkable diversity of legal structures of justice. Across Africa, complex pluralities of ‘customary’, religious, state, and transnational justice regimes interact on what is often contested terrain. This interdisciplinary conference will place the past and present negotiation of competing notions of justice under scrutiny.
The focus of the conference is on the many and varied actors pursuing visions of justice in Africa – their aspirations, divergent practices and articulations of international and vernacular idioms of justice. We will bring together topics of research that are at the cutting edge of contemporary scholarship across a wide range of disciplines, including activism, resource extraction, international legal institutions, and post-conflict reconciliation. Our engagement will be both empirical and theoretical: we aim to grapple with alternative approaches to the concept of justice and its relationships with law, morality, and rights. The keynote address will be given by Professor Kamari Maxine Clarke.

To apply please send a 300-word abstract to pursuingjusticeinafrica@gmail.com by 28 November 2014. We welcome papers from a range of disciplines, including - but not limited to - anthropology, history, law, criminology and politics. In order to allow time for discussion, presentations will be limited to 20 minutes. We are unable to fund travel and accommodation but will cover registration costs and conference meals for all delegates, and we can provide advice about accommodation in Cambridge.
