Dear Neighbors,
Ward 5 City Council Newsletter for October 20, 2014 - Councilmember Jarrett K. Smith
Tonight's Monday, October 20, 2014 Takoma Park City Council meeting's most important discussion topic will be parking in the Old Town area of Takoma Park. The discussion will include parking in adjacent neighborhoods and commercial areas.
Takoma Park Parking
As our commercial area in Old Town Takoma continues to grow in popularity and with Takoma, DC's growing commercial area nearby, parking has become more and more limited in the Takoma Park residential areas and adjacent to the commercial districts including our own.
There are some suggestions we have received from long time Takoma Park community activist Frances Phipps that I would like to share:
- Expand the impact area to include the District between Laurel, the railroad tracks, the Metro to Piney Branch Road, and enter into a joint planning effort with the District;
- Hire a professional planning firm to prepare an analysis and recommendation in the same mannger that has been done for Flower Ave and the New New Hampshire Ave planning effort and begin a collaborative effort with its citizens and the district; and/or
- Categorizing commercial owners and workers as a one type of demand which should be viewed separately from patrons and clientele demand..
While I have paraphrased her recommendations a bit, I think these are some very good suggestions. Given how serious parking has become to Takoma Park, I expect this evening's discussion to be lively.
Happening Tonight
Tonight - October 20, 2014: Washington Adventist University (WAU) will give a presentation on their proposed Health and Wellness Center. I encourage any residents of Takoma Park who are interested in learning more or have concerns to attend.

First Time Home Buyer Class
If you can make the City's Saturday class, here is an alternative: The Housing and Community Initiatives, which is the non-profit organization that sponsors first time home buyer classes in Montgomery County. They have an agreement with Montgomery County government and all classes are held in Rockville at 100 Maryland Avenue. Their schedule shows classes on Wednesday evenings as well as Saturday. You can register on line. If the class is full, I would suggest call HCII to be placed on the wait list. Click here for more information.
