NASL Elects 2014-15 Board of Directors
NASL is pleased to announce the election of new Board members Bill Blanchfill of McKesson Medical-Surgical; Christine Busby of Signature Rehab Services; Shawn Halcsik, Evergreen Rehabilitation; Natalie Hooper of RehabPro; and Tom Jeffers of Hill-Rom. IMPACT Act Signed into Law
On October 6, President Barack Obama signed into law the Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transformation Act of 2014 (H.R. 4994/S. 2553), the bipartisan legislation (now Public Law 113-185) requires CMS to institute standardized assessment of patients in the 4 post-acute care settings using existing tools. New Executive Action to Improve Quality in Nursing Homes & Home Health

NASL Celebrates 25 Years
Less than two weeks ago, NASL celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a spectacular reception on the top floor of the Gaylord with floor to ceiling views of the Potomac River with Washington, DC in the distance. Most importantly, 200 people came together to celebrate 25 successful years of advocacy and collaboration by an essential part of the long term and post-acute care sector—NASL members. We honored Laurence “Larry†Lane, one of the founders of NASL and were joined by NASL past presidents, retired members, former staff, AHCA leaders and staff and supporters. The reception kicked off a very successful conference – a record number of attendees and a new feature—co-hosting a daylong symposium on rehab therapy with AHCA. Read more

MedPAC Proposals Steering Toward High-Quality Post-Acute Care
During the October 10, 2014 public meeting, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) addressed proposals that would give private sector hospitals flexibility to steer fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries to high-quality post-acute care. Read more

DeSalvo Now Acting Assistant Secretary for Health
The National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Karen DeSalvo, MD was just named Acting Assistant Secretary for Health at HHS. In this new role, DeSalvo will be part of HHS' "team responding to Ebola.." and work on other issues around global health and disaster response. Other key staff departing ONC as often happens around presidential elections include Chief Nursing Officer Judy Murphy, RN and Chief Scientist Doug Fridsma, MD; Deputy National Coordinator Jacob Reider, MD, is expected to leave at the end of November. ONC's Chief Operating Officer Lisa Lewis is stepping up to serve as the Acting National Coordinator at ONC.
