The State of Afterschool

Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time has released three reports analyzing afterschool school in Allegheny County. These findings have introduced afterschool and out-of-school time community members to trends and developments surrounding participation, parents thoughts, funding, and future directions in quality out-of-school time. It was found that afterschool participation in Allegheny County is higher than both Pennsylvania and the national average with nearly 3 in 10 children in Allegheny County (28 percent) participate in an afterschool program. This is 11 percentage points higher than Pennsylvania (17 percent) and 10 percentage points higher than the national average (18 percent). Two other important discoveries were that out-of-school time is commonly available for ages 5-12, but less available for 13-19 year-olds and Allegheny County out-of-school time programs serve 28% of Allegheny County's school-age population.

America After 3PM

More and more, parents understand the benefits of afterschool programs and are enrolling their kids in record numbers. Participation in afterschool programs continues to grow, but for every child who participates, there are two more who would like to  if a program were available. America After 3PM spans a decade of data chronicling how children spend the hours between 3 and 6 p.m. the hours after school ends and before parents typically return home from work. It highlights the trends of afterschool program participation, documents the benefits associated with participation in afterschool programs, and measures public support for afterschool programs.
