Genesis Fundraiser!!!


We are putting our baking skills into practice for our Halloween cake sale fundraising event, held on 31^st October at Yorkshire Bank, Albion Street, Leeds. There will be many tasty treats on sale, as well as raffle tickets with some super prizes!! We will be there between 10am-3pm so please come down and support us!

 

Our Voices

Throughout October some of our Lionesses have been involved in a project called Our Voices.  Our Voices is a research project developed by the University of Bedfordshire to get young people’s views throughout Europe on the prevention work of sexual violence.  The young people have become ‘Youth Advisors’ and have had the opportunity to share their views and expertise through several workshops to help to develop future prevention work.  The University of Bedfordshire will develop a report based on the feedback from the different Our Voices groups throughout Europe (Including, Albania, Bulgaria, The Netherlands and Spain) and hope to develop the support that young people receive around sexual violence.


 

Sex Work and Human Rights: Lessons from Canada for the UK

Our CEO Rosie Campbell presented at the international conference  "Sex Work and Human Rights: Lessons from Canada for the UK" which was held at Durham university on 18th and 19th September.  In December 2013, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down three provisions of the Canadian Criminal Code, holding that they violate sex workers’ constitutional right to security of the person, and gave the Canadian Parliament one year to come up with new legislation, should it decide to do so. This landmark decision marked the first successful human rights challenge to the criminalisation of sex workers. The conference brought together academics, practitioners and activists from Canada and the UK, to think about the impact of the Bedford v Canada case in Canada and how it might provide lessons to the UK, and what human rights and a human rights challenge might look like for sex workers in the UK.​ Rosie presented on the approach of treating crimes against sex workers as hate crime.

Photography Project

Genesis are currently working with Gratterpalm and photographer Nick Eagle, to produce a series of photographs of women and also capture their stories. These images and words will be displayed in an exhibition to help show people the lives of women who sell sex in Leeds. The project focusses on dispelling stigmas and giving women a voice, showing they are normal women with the same fears, feelings, relationships and problems.

The women involved in the project have really enjoyed the experience so far. Four ladies have been photographed to date and the images are looking really striking. The women have felt empowered and have been involved in the styling of the images. This was important to allow them to feel in control of the project and put a strong powerful message across through the images. We will keep you up to date with the exhibition details and hope you can come and see the work we have been doing.
