The Gold Room Fall Concert Series Closes Friday with New Country Rehab

It's been a huge week for Rocky Mountain Highway!  First, we were thrilled to pick up a copy of The Colorado Springs Independent today and learn that the MeadowGrass Music Festival earned third place in the voting for Best Annual Outdoor Fest in the Pikes Peak Region.  Of course it's always a treat to win Best Music Festival in the Indy Music Awards, but making it into the top three area festivals of all stripes is truly humbling!

And in other news, we are proud to announce that our new website is up and running. This means, among other things, that it's now possible to check the Pikes Peak Concert Calendar for the most comprehensive listing of roots music shows in the region.  Kudos to Martin Harper, Tanya Shaw Jeffrey, and Chet Hardin for making it a reality.

Finally, if you haven't yet made it out to The Gold Room to catch a concert, you have one more chance left.  This Friday we are pleased to welcome the Canadian alt-country band New Country Rehab to Colorado Springs.

Formed in 2009, NCR applies a modern touch to traditional country sounds, resulting in an amalgamation of roots music styles ranging from folk to full throttle rock 'n roll.  Critics have compared the band favorably to leading indie-Americana stalwarts such as The Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons.

Advance tickets can be purchased on-line - enter the promo code "gold" to receive a $5 discount per ticket.  Or avoid the service charges by purchasing directly from Mike at Moondog Music Shop in Old Colorado City.  We will also give away a few pairs of tickets to randomly-chosen subscribers to this newsletter who e-mail info@rockymountainhighway.org - just make sure to include New Country Rehab in the subject.  Winners will be notified via e-mail on Thursday.

Now, on to the weekly Top 10 Concerts list:

1.  New Country Rehab, The Gold Room, Fri Oct 24 (7 pm, $15 adv, $20 day of show, $50 VIP).  With two albums to their credit, the band has been making waves touring throughout North American and beyond.  NCR is touring in support of the album Ghost of Your Charms, which was released last year on Kelp Records. There is no opening act for this show, so make sure to arrive early!  Doors open at 6:30 pm and the music will start at 7 pm or shortly thereafter.

2.  Jim Hurst, Black Forest Community Center, Fri Oct 24 (7 pm, $10 or $5 BRAS members & students).  Fans of bluegrass guitar pickin' won't want to miss the former guitarist for top artists such as Claire Lynch, Sara Evans, and Trisha Yearwood at this month's final Black Rose Acoustic Society Open Stage.

3.  Henhouse Prowlers, Front Range Barbeque (Old Colorado City), Wed Oct 22 (7:30 pm, free).  Chicago's finest bluegrass outfit returns to the west side with a new album, Breaking Ground.    The Prowlers are kicking off their western tour tonight, after having toured with the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria earlier in the year.

4.  Caravan of Thieves, Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts (Palmer Lake), Sat Oct 25 (7 pm, ADV: $17 TLCA members, $22 non-members; DOS: $22 members, $27 non-members).  The Connecticut-based Thieves always put on an entertaining show with impeccable musical chops and mirth a-plenty.  Their version of the Queen classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" always brings down the house.

5.   Joe Johnson, Kinfolks (Manitou Springs), Sat Oct 25 (2 pm, free).  After you watch (or participate in) the annual Coffin Races at the Emma Crawford Festival, mosey on over to Kinfolks for the after party featuring our own Joe Johnson and his deluxe band.  Manitou Springs will be in full on party mode Saturday.

6.  Jerry Barlow with Bud Johnson and Lee R. Johnson, Four Mile Community Club (Canon City), Sat Oct 25 (7 pm, $7 or $5 CRAS members, kids and students free).  Celtic fingerstyle guitar is the order of the day at this concert presented by the Canon Rose Acoustic Society, along with opening sets from local singer-songwriters including former corrections official Lee R. Johnson.

7.  Candye Kane, Crystola Roadhouse (Woodland Park), Sat Oct 25 (8 pm, $20).  Even while undergoing chemo treatment for pancreatic cancer, Candye is still out on the road touring in support of her new album, Coming Out Swingin'.  You can't keep a good woman down!

8.  Chauncy Crandall CD Release Shows, McCabe's Tavern, Fri & Sat Oct 24-25 (9 pm, $10 cover includes a copy of the disk).  One night just wasn't enough to properly introduce fans to Chauncy's sophomore album Breakdown.  Read Bill Forman's interview and album review, and consider that a perfect Friday night could start with  New Country Rehab at the Gold Room and end at McCabe's.

9.  Cotton Barrel String Band Costume Party, Urban Steam Coffee Bar, Fri Oct 24 (8 pm, free).  Caleb and Adrian from the Barrel House String Band join forces with guitarist Jesse Cotton Stone and Newsense drummer Eric Stephen Earley for a night of ghoulish fun in the Mill Street neighborhood.

10.  The Chain with The Wild Ones, Forever, The ModBo Co. School of Art at the Ivywild School, Fri Oct 24 (8 pm, $7).  While we ordinarily don't promote tribute bands, you've got to love the annual Halloween mini-tours in Colorado Springs.  This year's offering pays homage to Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty, respectively.  Note that this is the first of four shows, followed by stops at the Triple Nickel Tavern (10/30), Jack Quinn's Pub (10/31), and McCabe's Tavern (11/15).

Remember, for more options you can now peruse the Pikes Peak Concert Calendar at our new website.  Thanks for supporting live music!
