Battle of the Rockets:
Let's Go!

Collegiate Engineers and High School Teams, Ready to Battle

October marks the month for the  Battle of the Rocketsâ„¢ (BoR) teams to register their events with the Federation of Galaxy Explorers and begin the planning process for rocket battle development.  In partnership with the Federation of Galaxy Explorers , the Central Virginia Tripoli #25, Range & Safety Operations (RSO) deliver a high quality rocketry program that builds engineering skills, safety and quality into the BoR launch events.  Students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) careers begin the process of real engineering development when they compete in the Battle of the Rockets events. Our program is a series of competitive challenges focusing on the engineering design cycle.  BoR has three event challenges:  Altitude (College/High School), Spinning, and Planetary Lander.  The Planetary Lander event includes in their point spread the use of the Engineering Design Cycle and Preliminary/Critical Design Reviews as well as a Launch Readiness Review requirement.

The events within the competition are designed to inspire the student’s interest in engineering and science with an exciting hands-on competition.  The competition provides multiple levels of difficulty of engineering design challenges.  These challenges are meant to continuously increase as the competitor’s skill level grows.  Each year, Galaxy Explorers will introduce new, more complex event challenges for the competition.

Many universities are now using the BoR events, primarily the Planetary Lander Challenge as their junior level project because of the engineering application and skill set development.  With the use of the design reviews, as well as the hands-on development of high power rockets with robotic payloads, the wealth of information a student can learn with this event is immense.  This is a well developed line of engineering application.

The review process includes feedback from corporate and government engineering professionals who review the complex designs for safety, sound engineering application and feasibility of a successful launch.  We have seen much growth from the students who participate in our programs.  It brings quality application of engineering concepts to life.

The Federation of Galaxy Explorers is a non-profit 501c-3 organization.  We strive to bring the inspiration of space sciences through fun, tangible programs focused on STEM educational content.  Galaxy Explorers has four primary programs:  Mission Teams (after school enrichment programs), Summer Camps (Moon Base, Mars, Robots and Rocketry), The Battle of the Rockets and our newest program, the STEMShip Discovery Center.  Please ask how you can participate in one or more of our programs today.

Registration for the Battle of the Rockets ends at the end of October.  We hope to see you there!
