Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

October 30, 2014
5th graders, and their chaperones, enjoying a night in the Boston Science Museum last Friday.

Dear families and community members,
Thanks to High Fives, a non-profit organization that supports, among other things,  safety for skiers and boarders. We've been very fortunate to have them share motivating and inspiring presentations for the past several years. Ask your child (the presentation was shared with all 1st-6th graders) if they remember the timely messages that were delivered as we begin to gear up to enter our winter sports season

Sign up forms for our winter program are being sent home today; they are available by hard copy, email and on our school website. Please be sure to return these forms asap so we can begin planning. This is a terrific time to check out your child's gear for the season; anything that doesn't fit can be brought to the Ski & Skate sale and new gear picked up then too! Please be sure to let us know if you can volunteer to support this great program. We are especially in need of drivers, with a truck to transport our gear to and/or from the mountain.
SKI & SKATE  NOV 15th & 16th  sale details:  The sale is now just a few weeks away!   Pre-registration (get your consignment tickets early) begins Nov. 3rd, at the school.  Sign up to volunteer (we still have about 50 slots open) and get to shop EARLY! Volunteer sign up board located at the school or available online at http://vols.pt/qJj9E8

Respectfully,   Kaiya Korb

Thank you to The Bridges tennis coaches, especially Errol Nattrass, new Director of Tennis & Resort Program (and PE teacher Ally Bataille for arranging it all!) for the free tennis lesson that was delivered to a FULL gym Wednesday afternoon. Supporting over 40 students in improving their tennis skills all at the same time was truly an impressive (and fun!) sight to behold!

Open Hearth After School News
Just the other day I heard a comment on the radio that said this fall would be the fall to be compared with all others for a long time. I’m sure we can all agree with that! The weather, vibrant foliage, and soft southwest winds made this autumn a time of pure joy and a time to be outdoors. Our after school kids clocked many hours playing soccer, tag games, excavating in the sand boxes, and just having fun in the fresh air of the Mad River Valley.  This month we also had State Trooper Crista Maurice and her amazing dog, Cole, return to demonstrate the many roles the Vermont State Police K-9 Unit plays in protecting and helping Vermonters.
Looking ahead toward cooler weather and shorter days, I would like to remind you of our daily after school schedule and preview some of the events and activities we have coming up next month.
·         Opening Circle            2:30-2:45
·         Homework Support     Ongoing throughout the day
·         Outdoor/Indoor Play    2:45-3:45
·         Healthy Snack             3:45-4:15
·         Activities                      4:15-5:00
·         Clean-Up/Quiet Time   Till the end of our day.
On November 5th, our Early Release Day, Amy Butler from the North Branch Nature Center will join us for a day of outdoor learning and adventure. We will also use this half day to continue our exploration of owl habits and habitats by learning fun facts about owls and dissecting owl pellets. Please have your kids come prepared for a great outdoor day!
Samantha has been keeping the early days of fall alive by creating a mural with her artists depicting the flight and migration of the lovely Monarch butterfly. Jessica has been working with the engineers in our group to learn about the role friction plays in creating simple pulley devices, and Katie Doherty will begin some new science activities next week. Each Tuesday I work with our older students to learn about food, nutrition and cooking as we prepare and serve the Tuesday snack meal for all 30 students!  I am so proud of this group and know that they also take pride in their final product. We hope to prepare and serve a family meal toward the end of the school year.
While we are all excited about Halloween, we ask that NO COSTUMES and NO CANDY come to after school. We do have a fun Friday activity planned for everyone, and hope it provides a great end to the week and beginning of the weekend.  -  Susan Amestoy, Program director

Free "Hands Only" CPR Trainings
The Mad River Valley Ambulance Service will be offering the training on November 1 at 9:00, 10:00, or 11:00 at the Warren Town Hall or the Waitsfield Ambulance station.  Cardiac arrests are more common than you think, and they can happen to anyone at any time.  Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors.  The life you save with CPR is most likely to be a loved one.  Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home.  Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim's chance of survival.  To register: email cpr@mrvas.org or call 496-8888.  Additional free trainings will be held the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month at 6pm at the Waitsfield Ambulance station.  To sign up for these times use the same contact information as for November 1st sessions.

Mountainfilm on Tour Hosted by Waitsfield Children's Center
Each year, Mountainfilm on Tour takes a selection of outstanding films from the Telluride festival on the road to engage audiences who otherwise would not have an opportunity to experience them. Mountainfilm on Tour is dedicated to educating, inspiring and motivating audiences about issues that matter. For years Mountainfilm has attracted leading independent documentary film makers, artists and photographers, conservationists, mountaineers, scientists, journalists, and explorers from around the world to engage in the festival's motto of "Celebrating Indomitable Spirit". The tour will be held at the Big Picture Theater  on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 7:00pm promptly.  Tickets can be purchased online at mailto:thewaitsfieldchildrenscenter@gmail.com.  They will also be available for prchase the day of the event at the Big Picture Theater.  The cost for each show is $20.00/adult and $12/child or student/senior and $50/family.  The complete playlist is available at www.mountainfilm.org/tour/upcoming.

COMMUNITY CANDY DROP FOR HALLOWEEN

A collection box for the Loop Rd. Halloween route is now housed at the Waitsfield School. If you live on an area where you don't have many trick-or-treaters, please consider making a donation to this supply; the Loop Rd residents see trick-or-treaters from around the Valley.
