Diversify Your Resume - Apply for External Summer Research Programs
Your participation in a summer research program can set you apart when you apply to graduate schools, as it demonstrates your ability to contribute to more than one type of research and to work successfully with different teams. Additionally, it is your chance to have a new experience or learn a new skill not offered in your current lab.
Most of these programs will pay for your travel (so please look beyond NYC as the world does not end west of the Hudson!), housing, and will also include stipends, GRE/MCAT courses, and other benefits.

Apply Now to Be Invited to PRISM's Research Training
If you are student who will have completed Chem 201 by the end of fall and you meet the other PRISM requirements as posted on the website, you can be considered for PRISM’s January Research Training Workshop. In order to be invited, however, we must know about your interest and you must officially meet with a PRISM coordinator.
Please be sure to email prism@jjay.cuny.edu to let us know about your interest or stop by the PRISM office, especially if we don’t already know you personally.
Admission to the training is contingent on your fall grades, so official invitations will not be sent out until early January. The three day workshop will take place on January 20, 21, and 22.
Dr. Marcel Roberts Guest Lectures at QCC
PRISM and Queensborough Community College (QCC) have a long partnership, collaborating to create opportunities for their students to learn more about the science we do here at John Jay. As part of this partnership, each semester since 2007, a PRISM professor has visited QCC to guest lecture about his/her research work.
This fall, PRISM was represented by Dr. Marcel Roberts, who visited QCC on Friday, October 17, to speak about a "Lab-On Chip Approach to Forensic Science," and his lab's research to determine a fast, economical way to detect the presence of illegal substances in human sweat. Among the captivated audience were our partner forensics science students, excited to learn about the possibilities that await them when they transition to John Jay.

Upcoming Monthly Meetings
Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 19, during community hour in 09.64. You should have received your invitation, linked here, if you need more details. We’ll be visited by Dr. David Redmond, former Dean at Princeton University, speaking about the grad school admissions process. Don’t forget to RSVP by doodle by the November 17 deadline.
The semester is flying by and finals will be here sooner than you think! So don’t forget to save the date for our last monthly meeting of the fall semester, which will take place December 10, also during community hour.

Stony Brook University - Graduate School Preview Day
Consider visiting Stony Brook University on Friday, November 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., for their Graduate School Preview Day. You can learn about their programs, visit labs, and also do some important networking. PRISM has sent several of our successful graduates on to this university to pursue PhD’s in science disciplines. PRISM Hosts Lab Tours for Our Partner Forensics Students
As part of our ongoing efforts to meet and engage our partner forensic science majors in the CUNY Justice Academy, PRISM hosted lab tours in September and October. We thank PRISM mentors, Dr. Domashevskiy, Dr. Diaczuk, Dr. Champeil, and Dr. Li, PRISM students Desiree Williams, Valentina Aitbakieva, and David Rodriguez, and PRISM alumna Kitty Law for helping to make these tours interesting and relevant for our guests, who left inspired to learn more about our research and get involved upon their eventual transition to John Jay. Student Research Poster Competition - Cash Prize
The Empire State Medical Association (ESMA) is pleased to invite PRISM students to their Annual Student Research Poster Competition. Each year, ESMA holds this competition to create an environment for undergraduate and medical students to share ideas and research findings. The posters are evaluated by a committee comprised of ESMA members and are judged on the basis of quality, significance to the field, thoroughness, and clarity of presentation. Cash prizes are awarded to a winner in each category. The application deadline is November 22nd with the poster competition taking place on December 13th. Join us in wishing our stellar group of twelve PRISM researchers luck as they travel to San Antonio, TX, this week to present their research at the ABRCMS Conference. They have been so hard at work preparing and we are sure they will represent PRISM, themselves, and their labs well.
