PRISM's Winter Research Training Workshop

We are once again preparing to recruit and train the next crop of PRISM all-stars!  If you know of any students that should be considered for PRISM's January training workshop, please contact us or send them to see us ASAP.  As most of you know, a typically qualified student will have completed Chem 201 by the end of fall and will also meet the other PRISM requirements as posted on the website

Admission to the training is contingent on a student's fall grades, so official invitations will not be sent out until early January.  The three day workshop will take place on January 20, 21, and 22.

This also means that we'll have a fresh group of eager researchers that will have the PRISM stamp of approval.  If you are looking for new spring research students, please make sure that we know by stopping by the PRISM office or emailing prism@jjay.cuny.edu with details.

Upcoming Monthly Meetings for PRISM Students

Our next student meeting is Wednesday, November 19, during community hour in 09.64.  We’ll be visited by Dr. David Redmond, former Dean at Princeton University, speaking about the grad school admissions process with advice about what to and not to do.  As always, mentors are welcome to join.

Student Research Poster Competition - Cash Prize

The Empire State Medical Association (ESMA) is pleased to invite PRISM students to their Annual Student Research Poster Competition. Each year, ESMA holds this competition to create an environment for undergraduate and medical students to share ideas and research findings. The posters are evaluated by a committee comprised of ESMA members and are judged on the basis of quality, significance to the field, thoroughness, and clarity of presentation. Cash prizes are awarded to a winner in each category.  The application deadline is November 22nd with the poster competition taking place on December 13th.  Encourage your eligible students to enter.  Visit their website for a link to the poster guidelines and application materials.

Reminder - Please Submit Lab and Student Accomplishments

Reminder!  We need your help to produce a PRISM annual report that will highlight our accomplishments and assist our efforts to secure more funding!  If you have not already done so, please email Ed with a summary of papers published, presentations given, or awards won between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014.  Please include those that involved PRISM students or PRISM alumni during that time period.

Stony Brook University - Graduate School Preview Day

Encourage your students to visit Stony Brook University on Friday, November 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., for their Graduate School Preview Day.  They can learn about their programs, visit labs, and also do some important networking.  PRISM has sent several of our successful graduates on to this university to pursue PhD’s in science disciplines.  For more information about the location, agenda, and links to register, click here.  PRISM may be able to assist with travel costs; students can contact Ed for more information.

PRISM Hosts Lab Tours for Our Partner Forensics Students

As part of our ongoing efforts to meet and engage our partner forensic science majors in the CUNY Justice Academy, PRISM hosted lab tours in September and October.  We thank PRISM mentors, Dr. Artem Domashevskiy, Dr. Peter Diaczuk, Dr. Elise Champeil, and Dr. Richard Li, PRISM students Desiree Williams, Valentina Aitbakieva, and David Rodriguez, and PRISM alumna Kitty Law for helping to make these tours interesting and relevant for our guests, who left inspired to learn more about our research and get involved upon their eventual transition to John Jay.  Click here for more pictures from these tours.  We'll be looking to continue these tours over the winter break and during the spring semester and hope you will consider being a host lab!  Contact Fran Jimenez with any questions or to volunteer in advance!

Dr. Marcel Roberts Guest Lectures at QCC

PRISM and Queensborough Community College (QCC) have a long partnership, collaborating to create opportunities for their students to learn more about the science we do here at John Jay.  As part of this partnership, each semester since 2007, a PRISM professor has visited QCC to guest lecture about his/her research work.

This fall, PRISM was represented by Dr. Marcel Roberts, who visited QCC on Friday, October 17, to speak about a "Lab-On Chip Approach to Forensic Science," and his lab's research to determine a fast, economical way to detect the presence of illegal substances in human sweat.  Among the captivated audience were our partner forensics science students, excited to learn about the possibilities that await them when they transition to John Jay.

We thank Marcel for taking the time to share his work and hope that you will consider being the QCC guest lecturer for the spring semester!  If you'd like to volunteer or learn more, please contact Fran

Send Good Vibes - PRISM is at ABRCMS!

Join us in wishing our stellar group of twelve PRISM researchers luck as they travel to San Antonio, TX, this week to present their research at the ABRCMS Conference.  They have been so hard at work preparing and we know they will represent PRISM, themselves, and their labs well.  Thank you to the mentors who helped with the preparations!  Check out the ABRCMS recap that will appear in our next newsletter and on our website!
