The Langebaan Community Policing Forum held its inaugural ‘Hot on Tar’ Wheel and Leisure Show at the grounds of the Curro School in Langebaan on Sunday 2 November. The show was organised by Paige Lindenberg and her well-known car and powerboat racing father Peter and FMM supported the new show by sending up its 1930 Marquette to put on display, which proved to be one of the show stoppers on the day. Other supporters included the West Coast Classic Car Club and the Cobra and Lotus marque clubs.
Around 100 cars and motorcycles were exhibited. It was an excellent day’s entertainment and the event’s informal layout reminded me of the early years of the now well-established Cars in the Park and Hermanus Whales and Wheels shows. There was no parking stress, no dust and the convivial atmosphere lent itself to chatting to fellow exhibitors and spectators. Certainly, FMM made a couple of new friends during the day’s proceedings, and all funds raised are being donated to projects in the community. WH

On Saturday 25 October the museum was invited to the Eikestad Mercedes-Benz dealership, which offers free inspections and advice – along with some coffee and snacks – to owners of classic and collectable Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Robert, one of M-B’s own technicians, is at hand to offer qualified advice. I found the visit very useful as everyone is welcome to inspect each other’s cars and share information and help solve everyday problems. Altogether an excellent initiative. WH

The Citroën Club celebrated the Traction Avant’s 80th anniversary with a display of cars at the museum on 25 October. Supporting this milestone, in the current issue of Classic & Performance Car Africa there is a story on the museum’s 1954 Citroën Light 15 (see newsletter heading pic) that has been busy of late, having also taken part in the Oily Rag Run, the report on which follows. In September an excellent entry of 23 cars participated in FMM consulting engineer Dickon Daggitt’s Oily Rag Run for pre-1960 unrestored vehicles. The event started from Crossley & Webb in Cape Town and ran through Milnerton, Durbanville and Klapmuts to the finish at FMM. Along the route participants collected bread, cold meats, cheese and cupcakes to be enjoyed in a sunshine picnic on the museum’s lawns.
FMM entered four cars that were enthusiastically crewed by staff members. A (slightly) disguised Lorenzo Farella and Marco Barrera drove the 1956 Studebaker, Deon de Waal and Elton Botha were in the 1954 Citroën, Shawn Botha and David Magqwanti in the 1948 Mercedes-Benz while Wilfred Tarentaal and Wenstley Wicomb piloted the 1926 Chrysler. Oldest car was Adrian Denness’ 1919 Ford Model T and the youngest was Denis Porter’s Fintail Mercedes-Benz. FMM curator Wayne Harley did duty driving the ‘breakdown’ car.
The novelty event was won by Denness with second place and the Popular Choice award going to Richard Middleman’s 1934 Ford Phaeton. Joint third were Peter Truter’s 1936 Armstrong-Siddeley and Mel Rabie’s 1931 Chevrolet. Di Dugmore (1959 Austin-Healey Sprite) cheerfully accepted the ‘Stone Last’ award. The undoubted success of this event could be a precursor to similar runs in the future. MM

Charity bike ride and fun day

A reminder about the annual combined Bikers4Bandanas and Miles4Marrow Mass Ride and Fun Day on Sunday 23rd November 2014 at Killarney. Entry fee is a donation of R50 per person, which includes a metal badge. Gates open at 08h00 and the ride starts at 10h00. Organised in conjunction with the MOTH Motorcycle Association and Iron Wings RC, all proceeds will be donated to the Sunflower Fund. In the October/November issue of Classic & Performance Car Africa magazine there is a feature on FMM’s recently-acquired ex-SA presidential Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet.
The December/January issue will include FMM’s example of the ultimate fin car... In TopCar magazine’s series of articles on historic South African race circuits, the November issue covers Port Elizabeth’s various tracks and for December, the Free State’s Brandkop and Welkom circuits are featured. The Franschhoek Motor Museum is situated on the L’Ormarins Estate along the R45 in the Franschhoek Valley in the Western Cape.
The opening hours are Monday to Friday 10h00 to 17h00 (last admittance 16h00), Saturday and Sunday 10h00 to 16h00 (last admittance 15h00), and the museum is open on most public holidays
Admission prices are R60 adults, R50 pensioners, R30 children. An on-site delicatessen offers refreshments and A Rupert Wines can be enjoyed.
