It only took a few minutes for #technologyandstuff to become a trending topic on Twitter after last month’s World Series MVP award presentation. (For those of you who missed it, a Chevy spokesperson let his nerves get the best of him while handing Giants’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner the keys to a new Chevy truck, getting so far off track while describing its features that he simply said it was equipped with “um, ya know, technology and stuff.”

What happened next is a textbook example of real-time marketing at its finest. Rather than dwelling on the mishap, Chevy quickly turned a bad situation into a full-blown integrated campaign: The hashtag appeared in a handful of the brand’s tweets the following morning, and a full-page ad featuring the new catchphrase debuted in the sports section of USA Today later that week.

Lesson learned? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade ... or at least a clever marketing campaign.
