Alpha Lambda Delta Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Strosnider! Kaitlyn, a junior Secondary Education Biology major, received a JoAnne J. Trow scholarship from Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) worth $3,000. Kaitlyn has served as the treasurer of ALD and currently is serving as the President of Cal U’s chapter. ALD is a national society that honors the academic excellence of freshman students. Cal U Freshmen who achieve a GPA of at least a 3.5 during their first semester will receive a special invitation to join. Members of Cal U’s ALD chapter are involved in various service and career development opportunities throughout their membership.

New Ride Share Board

Ride sharing just got easier with the Cal U Commuter Council OrgSync RideShare Board. Whether your student is looking for a ride home during holiday break or would like to save money on gas when commuting to campus, RideShare can help. Interested students should log into the OrgSync page using their Cal U login credentials and post their information to share or ask for a ride.

Note: All students should read and understand the forum’s policies and rules. For additional questions, please contact the Office for Commuter and Non-Traditional Services at commuterservices@calu.edu or call 724-938-4021.

End-of-Semester Travel Plans

It’s not too soon to be thinking about Thanksgiving and end-of-semester travel plans. Students may use their CalCards to ride the MMVTA at no cost from campus to downtown Pittsburgh where they can make connections with transportation hubs such as the Greyhound bus station, Pittsburgh Amtrak train station, and the MegaBus pick-up location at the David Lawrence Convention Center. See the CAL Connector Guide to help transferring to/from downtown Pittsburgh and Philadelphia more convenient. For help with schedule information, contact the Transit Center 724-489-0880 or the Donora Garage 724-379-5956.

The Office of Student Affairs and the Student Association also sponsor shuttle transportation between main campus and major transportation hubs such as Pittsburgh International Airport. The shuttle service is offered for a small fee at the end of Fall and Spring semesters and during breaks when the University is officially closed. Shuttle arrangements must be made several days in advance. Students should watch campus announcements for more details or email Sheleta Webb, Assistant Director of Commuter and Non-Traditional Student Services, at webb_s@calu.edu.

Students and Financial Literacy: Is That Rewards Card Really Worth It?

All too often, college students open their mailboxes to find several credit card offers inside. One may have a plane on the front, one may feature a cruise ship, and one may show a beach. Especially on cold winter days, when a tropical getaway is what a student may be wishing for most, these reward credit card offers may be enticing. However, before your student sends in the application, it is crucial that they consider whether the offer is truly worth it.  Read more
