Cupcake Joan  - a poem by Emma & Violet in Grade 5

There was a sweet woman, her name was Joan,
She couldn't bake cupcakes on her own.
She got them from the cupcake store,
After she ate them, she wanted more.
Big, large, medium, small,
She couldn't decide, so she got them all.
Later that night, she had a bad dream,
In the morning, she started to scream.
A giant cupcake ate her whole,
It didn't even bother to put her in a bowl.
All of this is very true,
It could even happen to you.
Don't eat cupcakes all the time,
Or you may experience this rhyme!

Twilight Dinner Thanks

Our 2014 Twilight Dinner at Meshewa Farm was an enormous success! This year's fabulous event brought our school $19,000 - our highest earnings ever for this event. The evening itself was great fun for all that attended; guests were treated to delicious food and drinks from local artisans, inspiring entertainment, lively art auctions, wish lanterns and s'mores around the fire. We are so grateful to Joni Sherman for chairing this year's Twilight Dinner. She and her team - Jen Mantle, Jessica Scheid, Tammy Duvall, Tamara Harris, Karen Crick,Teri Heist, Derek dos Anjos, Jocelyn dos Anjos, Jeff Brandt, Alicia Wilhelmy, Evonne Morales, Suzanne Lepore - truly outdid themselves! Thank you to all who supported this evening.

Things to Know and Do at CWS

Children's Campaign FAQs

Q. What is the Cincinnati Waldorf School Children's Campaign?
A. The Children's Campaign is our school's annual giving fund. To sustain and enrich a quality Waldorf education for our children, we rely on this annual giving fund to provide our school with resources to be used where the need is greatest. Gifts to this annual campaign support such areas as faculty professional development, academic and artistic programs, campus maintenance and tuition assistance.

Q. Why should I donate money when I already pay tuition?
A. Tuition covers only 85% of our annual operating expenses.  We depend upon a few annual fund raisers - the Twilight Dinner, the Children's Campaign and our Spring Gala - to close the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student.

Q. What does this mean per student?
A. Our fund raising need for the 2014/15 school year is $113,000. This translates to around $500 per student needed in addition to tuition.

Q. $500 is too much for me. Should I even bother?
A.  Absolutely! Donations at all levels make a difference. Each year, we strive for 100% family participation above all else. Our community thrives best when everyone participates in whatever ways they are able.

Q. What if we achieved our full yearly fund raising goal via the Children's Campaign alone?
A. We could use all the funds raised at the Twilight Dinner and Spring Gala for staff, board, and parent "wish list" items that never quite make it into the budget. Imagine the possibilities!

Q. How can I donate?
A. There are many ways to donate:
  • By check made payable to CWS-please turn checks in to our main office
  • By Credit Card - Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover
  • By monthly pledge installments (of any amount) via credit card

Dads of Waldorf Work Day + Pig Roast

The Dads of Waldorf are sponsoring a "Work Day + Pig Roast" at Meshewa on November 15, 2014, beginning at 10 a.m. This event is designed to build community and help get the Meshewa campus ready for the winter months.

This is an Adult Only event. But all adults - dads, moms, friends and grand-friends alike - are invited to join in the work and the fun that follows.

The work begins at 10 a.m. and last until around 3 p.m. After the work has been completed, we invite you (and adult family members and friends who couldn't make it for the work) for a Pig Roast! The pig, buns, beer, wine and bourbon are provided. We ask that everyone bring a side dish or desert to share and any favorite beverage not listed here.

Feel free to bring your own tools to share, and please dress for the weather. This event is rain or shine. We look forward to seeing you!

Questions about Dads of Waldorf and how you can participate? Please contact Roger Rose via email and join our Facebook group HERE.

Join us on Thursdays in the Community Room after drop-off as we talk, laugh, felt, stitch and create. Craft Guild is seeking members to help work on projects for the school, beginning with special little gifts for our Holiday Faire's Angel Room. Experience is not necessary, but come and you will gain new skills as well as new friends. We hope to see you this week! If you have questions, e-mail hjodock@gmail.com, or jennasizemore@mac.com. Thank you!

Lost:

The Bennett family (Woodland Preschool) is missing a child's red hooded cape with a navy blue lining - it is handmade and only a few weeks old. If you found this precious item, please email Erin Bennett at erin.d.bennett@gmail.com. Thank you!

Don't forget those used printer cartridge donations!

CWS gets free office supplies when you bring in your used printer/toner cartridges. We really appreciate your help in this small, but important, matter. Just bring them in to the office and we'll take care of the recycling!

Blessing Bags

Please join us the week before Thanksgiving, on Friday, November 21st at 3:15, to help put together Blessing Bags for the homeless. Last year we launched this project with a handful of Waldorf families. The experience was so rewarding, and the parent feedback and interest in participating so overwhelming, that we are inviting all CWS families to participate this year! A good portion of this project will be led by the CWS 8th Grade Class as they continue their commitment to service work following their experience serving a Navajo family on their recent 8th Grade Trip. To participate, please visit our project on Sign-up Genius: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4ba9a82aaaf58-blessing

Assembly will take place in the gymnasium after school and continue until all bags are assembled, (approx.) 5:30/6pm. Once completed, all participants will be invited to take a few bags home with them to keep in their cars to distribute as needed. The remaining bags will be delivered to a homeless shelter. If you would like to help out but cannot participate in assembling the bags, we welcome financial contributions that will allow us to purchase additional supplies. You can leave a donation for "8th Grade Blessing Bag Project" in the CWS Main Office (checks payable to Carolyn Evans)

Finally, since we will be busy for a few hours immediately after school, we'd like to have some snacks to keep the kids happy and nourished (and out of the Blessing Bags stash!), so please also bring a food item to share for the Community Food Table. We will end the night with a walk over to the Mariemont Graeter's.
We hope to see you there!

What Our Classes Are Doing Now

Oak Tree K ~ We are busy practicing a new play for our families to come and see. More details later. We are thankful for the firemen who came to our Halloween celebration. The children really enjoyed seeing the inside of the truck and and all the equipment.
Rose Blossom K ~ Leaves are crunching beneath our feet and we feel the chill in the air every morning as we greet our friends. We are hearing the story of Mother Earth calling her children underground  to stay warm. We will be felting a little mouse this week.
Grade One ~ We are continuing our journey through the alphabet using pictures from fairy tales. We recently learned two vowels which allows us to now make words!

Grade Two ~  We are looking forward to the Lantern Walk and will finish our lanterns this week in preparation. We are learning to read this month in morning lesson and our stories will be about legendary people from all cultures. We will be planting apricot tree seeds in the courtyard to overwinter.
Grade Three ~  We just wrapped up Hebrew Stories with Ms. Harris and now we are moving on to Time and Measurement with Ms. Warren - learning about time, linear measurement and liquid measurement. We are making leaf crayon rubbing lanterns and singing November songs. We’ll be making rice pudding as a cooking project before Thanksgiving and also doing Peace Work in our classroom.
Grade Four ~ We will be starting a language arts block focusing on sentence structure, grammar rules and parts of speech.
Grade Five ~ North American Geography
Grade Six ~ We are studying economics and business math. We walked to Graeters for icecream and, once back in the classroom, students calculated the tip! We look forward to a guest presentation on banking from our class parent, Paul Johnson.

Grade Seven ~ We begin our first Chemistry block in November. This first experience with Chemistry brings students through a process of observation, reflection, doing and describing in order to understand the inner nature of substances. Burning is one of the oldest catalysts, and we will observe how different materials burn. We will also explore the polarities of acid and base. Lab (and home) safety - careful handling of materials, protective gear, etc. - will also be covered. We apologize in advance for any strong aromas (cabbage juice)!
Grade Eight ~ We are studying the French Revolution, American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.

Spanish ~
  • 8th grade ~ We finished learning about the use of direct and indirect object pronouns in Spanish, and practiced translating and structuring/simplifying sentences. Currently we are practicing conversational speaking, using what we know and applying our language in real time. Some guided conversations and others topic-based, open-ended discussions.
  • 7th grade ~ We are looking at irregular verbs in the present tense that don't follow our normal rules. We are also having a quick review of ancient cultures of Spain and will be discussing in more detail the Middle Ages, leading up to the year 1492.
  • 6th grade ~ Much practice with regular verbs in the present tense, rhythm games, a little bit of translation, some writing, and a quiz. Next, we will look at the Geography of Spain and talk about some of its earlier inhabitants before Roman rule.
  • 5th grade ~ Just finished a block on food and restaurant Spanish. We made our own menus and acting out restaurant role-playing scenes. Now we are getting into reading longer stories, focusing on pronunciation and reading comprehension. Discussing what we read.
  • 4th grade ~ Finishing up telling time in Spanish, incorporating fractions, expressing our usual activities throughout the day, hearing stories, singing songs and playing games like Simon Says and Tic-Tac-Toe with Spanish vocabulary.
  • 3rd grade ~ We began learning how to write in Spanish, reviewed the alphabet, are learning how to describe animals and objects in the classroom, expressing our favorite animals, hearing stories, singing birthday songs, and quickly improving on our listening comprehension and classroom readiness.
  • 2nd grade ~ Reviewing colors, numbers and weather, learning about articles of clothing and objects in nature, playing games and singing songs with movement exercises.
  • 1st grade ~ Practicing numbers, colors, parts of the body, and learning about weather. Meeting new animals and characters in our stories. Singing greeting songs, hand gesture songs, and will have a story about a mother hen and her chicks (later accompanied by song).

CWS Grateful Grams

We are grateful to the following CWS community members:

If you are feeling grateful for something someone did to help our school and community, please give a shout-out to Libby Rupp via email for inclusion in one of our upcoming issues of Inreach.

Many thanks go to Kirana Rao and her amazing team of volunteers who prepared and served up our very first Warm Hearth Guild lunch last Friday! The food was wholesome, delicious and obviously made with love. We are so grateful for this yummy new opportunity and can’t wait for future meals!!!

Thanks to David Smith, parent of Julia (8) and Jasper (6), for his great idea to recycle toner cartridges. He researched the program and brought his idea to us last January. Recycling toner and ink reduces waste going into landfills and earns the school money. This program has earned more than $100 toward CWS office supplies. Please join us in thanking David for his great effort and keep recycling those cartridges!

Alumni Updates

Seven Hills senior Zoe Barnhart (CWS Class of 2011) recently presented at a conference in Flint, MI, that focused on teenagers making a difference. The Hero Roundtable conference (http://www.heroroundtable.com) drew over 1000 people in its second year. Zoe’s presentation, “Creating a Rites of Passage Program for Teenagers” was based on her website (http://www.ritesofpassagenetwork.org). The site is designed to help people and organizations create rites of passages programs, which are composed of a set of experiences that mark a teen’s transition from child to young adult. These programs are designed to support self-discovery as well as competency building in areas such as personal health, personal finance, how to build and fix things, relationships, citizenship, and leadership. Congratulations, Zoe! We’re very proud of you.

CWS Class of 2014 alumni Mable Lecrone, Cydney Leonard, Iris Harmon, and Olivia Mullins are all involved with SCPA’s upcoming production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” These girls are brand new to their high school and making a splash already!!! We encourage you to consider supporting them by attending this beloved show.

Why Waldorf?

I love that Waldorf Education provides a rich academic curriculum while also developing students’ “soft skills” such as perseverance and sustained focus on a task. When my child spends weeks on a handwork project he learns that he is capable, through persistent hard work, of creating something beautiful and of value. The pride and joy he expresses upon completion of a project are priceless.

Holiday Heart: How do your holiday celebrations reflect your values & desires?

Join me in the Main Campus Community room on Tuesday, Nov. 11th at 8:15am for a roundtable discussion of the upcoming holidays. The holidays of November and December are often steeped in tradition inherited from our families or based on societal expectations. Sometimes those traditions can feel non-negotiable and limiting ... other times they can evolve into new and joyful experiences.

Let's examine how our holiday celebrations reflect our true hearts’ desires, and begin to form questions about how to create fresh, joyful and authentic holiday experiences. Come away with new ideas and an intention to celebrate the most authentic and joyful holiday season ever.

Mail to look forward to?!

In addition to being a parent of a Waldorf preschooler, Jennifer Lanski is also an artist. (Perhaps you know her family from seeing them bike to school in nearly all weather conditions, or maybe you've seen her drawing on location in Mariemont or Fairfax.)
Jennifer has an ongoing project that you may be interested in, called subscriptionART. Twice a month subscribers receive postcard-sized prints created from original drawings, delivered through the mail. (CWS was even featured in one!) If you subscribe, the subscriptionART project can bring joy and anticipation to your mailbox too. Subscriptions start at just $20 for 4 months.
