Message from Dr. Decker:

November is National Adoption Month

Adoption Myth #1: There are no orphans in the United States.
Adoption Myth #2: All children in foster care require special education.
Adoption Myth #3: If you are gay or lesbian, you can't adopt.
Adoption Myth #4: You have to have a lot of money to adopt.

Did you know there are more than 100,000 kids in foster care waiting to find their forever families? Two percent of all kids in the U.S. joined their families through adoption. We need to hear these voices. C4K has a lot of information about foster care, adoption, kinship care and more. Here are a few resources to get you started:

Resources, Events & Info for Parents and Caregivers

Adoption Awareness Month

Franklin County Children's Services:  Click here to view their webpage for adoption information. Also learn ways to get involved in helping children in custody or families looking to share their love and homes with children waiting to be adopted.

The State of Ohio has an adoption subsidies guide which shares information about financial help and other resources for adoptive families.  One financial program, called Post-Adoption Special Services Subsidy (PASSS), assists families with the costs related to a child's physical, developmental, mental, or emotional handicap or condition.  There is no fixed income limit.  The funds are available to all adoptive families regardless of the type of adoption, with the exception of step-parent adoptions (public or private, domestic or international).

AdoptUSKids is emphasizing the importance of adopting siblings here in the USA.  They offer resources to potential adoptive families as well as support information for new or current adoptive families.  You can also call (888) 600-4005 for information on other adoption and foster care.

Walk With A Doc

According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Think it doesn’t do any good? Think again. Walking is low impact; easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments, heart conditions, and those who are more than 20% overweight. In addition, research has shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular exercise! That quick stroll around the block seems a little more worthwhile now, doesn’t it?
Walk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. At every walk, a doctor will discuss a new health related topic and lead a 45 minute walk that is open to community members. All ages and fitness levels are encouraged to spend time with their neighbors, talk to a doctor and take a step toward better health.  Walk with a Doc is currently available in 8 locations throughout Columbus: Westerville, Dublin, Grove City, Upper Arlington, North, South, West and Far East side of Columbus.  Find us at a location near you. www.walkwithadoc.org

Epilepsy Awareness

A person with Epilepsy experiences recurrent seizures that are caused by many different conditions.
Do you know what to do if you see someone having a seizure? Be aware. Know the steps of seizure first aid.
  • Stay with the person
  • Time the seizure
  • Protect the person from injury
  • Loosen anything around their neck
  • Don't try to restrain the person
  • Don't put anything in their mouth
  • Roll them on their side as the seizure subsides
  • After the seizure, talk to the person reassuringly
Common triggers of an Epileptic seizure are (but not limited to) stress, sleep deprivation, drugs and alcohol, hormones, missed medicines, missed meals, low blood sugar, lights that flash or flicker.  Learn more about Epilepsy by visiting the Center for Disease Control's website and share this toolbox with your staff, students or clients.
