What's Up at the Library

In October we welcomed a very special volunteer—Jane Claud from Pompano Beach, FL. Jane is a retired school library media specialist. What a wonderful asset she was to both libraries. Not only did she bring her sharp eye and extensive knowledge to our collection of books in both library locations, she also hosted a two-day sewing workshop and a beading workshop for adults and children.
Jane cleaned, sorted, and organized our supplies, games, and toys. She also analyzed our collection of books and weeded about 100. These were given away to anyone with an interest to add to his or her home collection. Thanks Jane, we hope to see you again soon! We appreciate all our library volunteers. For more information about how you, too, can volunteer download our Library Volunteer Program brochure.
At the Sapo Playa branch, a new inverter and solar panel were added to this small but important outpost for literacy. The inverter takes energy from the solar batteries and converts it from 12 volts to 220 volts--energy flow: solar panel -> battery ->inverter -> outlets. Our donor from the US, Saint Ignatius College Prep, gave the library a $3000 gift for technology improvements. Now this library's one desktop computer and collection of XO notebook computers can be charged, giving more children access so they can develop the skills they’ll need in the years ahead. Technology improvements at the Palmeras branch will also be made in the near future.

Evaluation Time

The 2014 Adopt-A-School evaluations begin on Monday, November 17th and will take place for two weeks. Each community (55 in total) will have an all day visit and review from the CONAPAC team. This year there will be eight staff members from CONAPAC, twelve Peruvian volunteers, and three American visitors joining this important process, creating six teams in total. Claire Lannoye-Hall and Adam Dewey from the Detroit Zoo and Ron Rossi from EKOAmazon will join us in this process.

The teams will review in three areas—teacher and student competency, community leadership and organization, and environmental sensibility of the community residents at large. After all the data is collected and communities are ranked, decisions will be made about continuing community participation for 2015. Read a list of our criteria for remaining a CONAPAC partner. A particular focus will be on environmental and clean water management for this year’s evaluation teams. A special thank you to Amazon Explorama Lodges for contributing boats, drivers, accommodations and food for all the volunteers and CONAPAC.

Andrea Asipali Update

Our Rotary Exchange scholar from Palmeras II continues to thrive in
Michigan.
Her favorite class is AP Biology. The volleyball season has
ended but Andrea has had plenty of new adventures, from Halloween to
the first snow of the season. She has participated in two Rotary
conferences, one in Petoskey, MI and the second in Tustin, MI where she
met other exchange students and made new friends from all over the
world.
Her next Rotary conference will take her across the border to
Canada. At the end of the month Andrea will move on to her second
homestay family, it will be bittersweet since she has formed
such a close bond with her first family. She will be moving from a
home within the Fremont city limits to a home in the countryside
surrounded by farmland and forest. Another new adventure awaits!

We are partnered with Pack for a Purpose to better assist you with a suggested list of donations that you can carry down. If you find yourself traveling to the Amazon rainforest and staying with Explorama Lodges, take a look at their site.

Since June of this year, we've received 120 pounds of donations--school supplies and various items for the library.

GIVE THE GIFT OF CLEAN WATER

CONAPAC has been been providing access to clean water in the Peruvian rainforest since 2008. Our Family Water Project places Sawyer PointONEâ„¢ water filtration systems in individual homes in smaller communities where a large water treatment plant is impractical.

A gift of $195 will supply one household. Over 175 families (households) are still waiting to receive their water treatment systems and clean water.
