New video from People for Education: 
Special Education in four minutes!

People for Education has released a second video for parents, focusing on special education. This four minute video—generously funded by the RBC Foundation—provides an overview of the steps parents can take if they think their child may need special education support.

Watch this parent-friendly video on our Youtube channel. School councils, education and community organizations, and people working with families are welcome to post a link to the video on your own sites.

Ministry consulting on sex education curriculum

In November, the Ministry of Education will hold consultations on the Healthy Living component of the elementary school Health and Physical Education (H&PE) curriculum that includes sex education. One parent from every elementary school will be consulted, as well as groups of high school students. The new curriculum will be released in February 2015, and be in elementary and secondary schools in September 2015.

Schools as Community Hubs

Over the next year, the Ministry of Education, working with other Ministries will consult with the public about how to support using school buildings as community hubs. The Premier sent "mandate letters" to the Ministers of Education, Health, and Municipal Affairs requiring them to work together to develop new policy.

Changes (and cuts) coming to education funding

The Ministry of Education is consulting with stakeholders and the public about how best to reduce education spending by $250 to $500 million over the next three years. The spending cuts will help the government meet its promise to eliminate the provincial deficit by 2017.
