Director's Update

I am so proud of the work that we do at Oasis and the community of people who rally to our cause when we need them most.  I have witnessed so many acts of kindness and generosity over the past two years in my tenure as Director of Oasis. A position that I have found one of the most rewarding as an officer in The Salvation Army and one that I will dearly miss when I hand over the leadership to Captain Darren Kingston at the beginning of next year.

I have so much respect for the staff, supporters and young people and cannot thank you enough for what you have taught me about myself and yourselves over the years. Whilst I would love to be part of the next stage of our journey, I leave Oasis knowing it will continue to thrive, grow and help those who need it most.

God Bless You
Major Keith Hampton

Small Steps, Big Journey's: Oasis to India
On November 20 2014, Unique Journeys and Oasis will be taking a group of eight young people to India for an unforgettable journey. A journey that aims to help them develop a stronger sense of purpose, sharpen their instincts, while gaining a better understanding of the world and their place within it.

A key element of the trip is investing into the local Indian community and empowering our young people to continue making change upon their return home. We’re giving our young people an incredible experience; the opportunity to do philanthropy in one of the most poverty-stricken countries in the world, with the hope to facilitate a turning point in their lives.

The 16 day adventure will see our young people visit MITHRA, a home for disabled from the slums of Chennai, and PREMA VASAM, a centre begun only 15 years ago that now accommodates over 150 children of all ages and backgrounds.

Last week, we hosted a fundraiser to help support the work the young people will be doing as part of Small Steps, Big Journey’s: Oasis to India. The night was a huge success with over $3000 raised. Thank you to everyone who attended the evening and a HUGE thank you to our community champions.

Golden Age Cinema for allowing us exclusive access to their beautiful cinema for the event and to Gelato Messina, who donated their highly sought after gelato to help us spoil our guests on the night. Finally to Buds & Bowers Florist for donating to us beautiful Indian inspired flowers for the evening.

We also want to thank all of those people and businesses who have contributed through donations. If you would like to donate, please head to: http://www.everydayhero.com.au/event/smallstepsbigjourneys_oasistoindia
Christmas at Oasis Youth Support Network
At Oasis we love to make Christmas special for all the young people who utilise our services. We are lucky enough to have such wonderful supporters who donate such wonderful gifts each year to ensure our young people aren’t forgotten at this time.

Once again, we would value any donations that you could send our way towards Christmas gifts this year. We’ve outlined in the above graphic a list of special festive ideas to inspire you.

The only thing that we do request is that gifts are not wrapped, (we’ve had some interesting items over the years) and that you please don’t buy kids toys, given that we work with teenagers, we don’t have a lot of use for them ;)

Project Uplift

NSW Premier Mike Baird has been a strong advocate and supporter of Oasis for many years, but this passion for making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged and homeless youth took on new meaning with the launch of Project Uplift - a siz-day trek along the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory.

The intrepid young team was represented by four different youth services in NSW, while the eight mentors were hand picked by Premier Baird, recognised leaders in their own fields.

The trek was met with eagerness and excitement from the two young people from Oasis who were invited to be part of the group.

The initiative was designed to inspire and give a group of disadvantaged young people hope. We are very proud of all the young people, mentors and youth services involved in this project, it certainly looked like an amazing event to be a part of – to see more of this story check out the video here.
