"The Rocky Road to a Real Transition"

A meeting of Transition Stroud Reading Group

Date: Saturday 15th November 2014
Place: Lansdown Hall, Stroud, UK, GL5 1BB
Time: 4 am – 6pm

At last month's session of the Transition Stroud reading group we discussed the question "What is the Transition Movement?", responding primarily to the most recent edition of the Transition Free Press.

This month, we encourage people to read "The Rocky Road to a Real Transition", and/or the most recent edition of the Transition Free Press, and/or attend the film screening on November 9th.

The 'Rocky Road' pamphlet asks the following questions, which will guide the reading group discussion as well: "Where do we want to get to in the coming years? What kind of political system will get us there? What does social justice mean for those interested in transitioning? What and who are we actually ‘saving’ from climate change? What awaits us on the ‘other side’ of a transition?"

There are two copies of the pamphlet in the Transition Stroud library in the Black Book Cafe, or you can read "The Rocky Road to a Real Transition" by downloading it from here (link to large pdf file).

Keen students can also read a response by Rob Hopkins here!

Next dates of the Transition Stroud Film & Discussion series

Please put the dates of these events in your diaries.

On December 7th we are really lucky to be able to welcome George Marshall from the Climate Outreach & Information Network to Stroud. George has recently published a book receiving rave reviews called "Don't Even Think About It: why our brains are wired to ignore climate change, for a participatory workshop on understanding, communicating, and campaigning on climate change.

On January 25th we will focus on another book receiving a lot of attention - Naomi Klein's "This Changes Everything: capitalism vs the climate", with an hours worth of film and an hour of discussion on the links between climate change and economics.

Both events will be followed by sessions of the Transition Stroud Reading Group, so we are giving advanced warning to enable people to find the time to read these lengthy and dense books. We do not have copies in the Transition Stroud Library (yet!), but copies are available from Stroud Bookshop, and Stroud Library should enabled you to borrow copies as well (perhaps via the inter-library loans system, for which there is a small charge).

If you can help us publicise these events, please let us know via admin@transitionstroud.org
