Let RCR Find Your Next Boat, or Sell Your Existing One!
What’s New? By Tim Finkle: Happy Halloween and good luck to all of those trick-or-treaters out there in finding the few houses in town that leave the basket of candy outside the door. I remember as a kid, rollerblading (when that was still cool) around the neighborhood in search of the nice houses that left out “king size” candy bars. I would try to fill my pillow case with as much candy as I could possibly carry, isn’t that the point of this holiday?
Last weekend was a great ending to the season for me as we got to race in the J/70 Fall Brawl regatta in Annapolis. The racing was very competitive and we had breeze into the 20 knot range with full on planing downwind all of Sunday. It is going to be a tough break away from “Junior” over the next few months, but probably a good rest for my Dacron sails. I am very much looking forward to the winter series in Tampa. It’s a great reason to own a trailerable boat, the winter months up here don’t have to stop your sailing season. The Davis Island three part series is only Saturday and Sunday racing, so you can fly down on Friday night after work, race on the weekend and fly back on Sunday night in time for work in the morning. The Davis Island YC is very accommodating and allows the boat to store onsite fully rigged. It is also a great club that is beyond welcoming to its visitors.
Thinking warmer thoughts on a J/70
Unfortunately, there is no sailing for us this weekend since we will be showing several boats to customers coming in from Toronto and Michigan. This is a great time of year to be in the market for a boat since our shelves are heavily stocked with new listings. Check out our full listings at the end of this newsletter or on our website; new listings come in daily. We recently got some sailboats in great condition like a Beneteau First 44.7, Hunter 44, Catalina 36, Beneteau Oceanis 34, Melges 24 and more.

We also want to remind you that we still have our
J/88 in the water in Youngstown for those who want to go for a demo sail, only a few more days before that’s not true anymore. The boat has been wildly popular in our area and beyond, with a one design fleet already registered for Key West this year.
J/88 still on a mooring in Youngstown
Sailing with Jimmy Buffett: A pleasant sailing reminder on this lousy weather day, compliments of Scuttlebutt. Jimmy Buffett’s boat is a Morris 36, similar to one RCR recently sold.

New Custom Covers and Canvas Winter Cover in Erie: A nice new cover for a Beneteau 34 in Erie. This one was built so that you don’t need a frame and is easier to install. It is also less expensive. A good cover is really important to keep the snow and ice off the boat.
Nice new winter cover
New Tugs for the Niagara Power Plant: The Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland, Ohio, has been contracted by New York Power Authority (NYPA) to build and deliver two new tugboats for the Niagara Power Plant’s winter operations in Buffalo, N.Y. The new tugs will augment and replace aging vessels that are used for the installation

RCR Commissioning on the Road: We included some pictures the last two weeks of the new J/88 getting commissioned in Naples, Florida. We have one more shot from the guys who got the boat out for its first sail. The “Touch 2 Play” Beaver on the brand new Quantum mainsail. Pretty cool!!
For those who miss reading “What’s new by Don Finkle”, see down in the stories, news and articles section below. I may have taken over the bulk of the newsletter writing, but he still has the itch to write once in a while. Hard to put the pencil down after writing these for over 10 years!
Looking for a boat to buy? Let us find it for you. Check out our list below, those shown in this newsletter are only the boats we have for sale
in-house, there are many other boats available too. Please keep in mind that the list contains only our own Central listings, those that are listed directly for sale at RCR. We work with out of town brokers to find boats for our local customers. So please let us know what you are looking for and we will find it and negotiate on your behalf.
No cost to you for this arrangement.
If you are thinking of selling, we can use more listings because our extensive marketing program generates plenty of leads. Contact any of our brokers for a free evaluation of the sale prospects and pricing for your present boat.

Stories, News & Articles:
A reminder of why I love sailing,
Don Finkle: Last Sunday we had our last local race of the season here on the Lower Niagara River. Preceding the race we were hosting the LYRA ExCom meeting at the Youngstown YC starting at 1100. I had forewarned the other members of the committee that at 1300 I was cutting out to go sailing and taking one of the other fellows with me. After all it was the last dance of the year and we weren't going to miss that. It was a breezy cool day, cloudy but great for an end of season day on the water. The crew had the boat at the dock ready to go, and after suiting up in our foul weather gear we hopped aboard and headed out to the starting line. The point here is not the race itself, where we finished well despite being over the line early and having to restart. Rather it was about the pure exhilaration of a fast ride on a good boat with friends. The wind and waves in the lake were both up to the point where we hit over 12 knots in the J/88 jib reaching and surfing on waves. It was a riot! After the race we were all too pumped up to go to the dock so we sailed up the River for another two hours, enjoying the day with friends. Everyone agreed that is was a super way to wrap up the season.
Good gear makes sailing more enjoyable. After the race last week one of our friends commented on how the good clothing we have nowadays allows comfortable sailing on days when it is cold and/or wet. Layering with technical shirts, fleece and microfleece under well-made foul weather gear allows one to have fun on heavy air days without feeling like a drowned rat. Good stuff is not cheap but it lasts. The main benefit is allowing you to enjoy using your boat on days when you might not otherwise go out. On this subject I learned that one of the best ways to stay warm is by wearing a vest-style PFD (lifejacket if you will). The vest helps keep your core warm and comfortable. On top of that you shouldn't be wearing heavy clothing without a PFD anyway. I know the inflatable PFDs are popular but they don't do anything to keep you warm....but may be more comfortable in the summer months.
In recent years there has been more emphasis on reminding boaters of the hazards of cold water. Hypothermia can kill and it is important to take proper precautions. This time of year the water is still not that cold, but over the winter and in the spring this is an increased danger.
Who doesn't love a bargain? While going over some figures for a customer's boat loan recently I was reminded of a change that has taken place in recent years. For a long time boats kept on fresh water enjoyed a premium at resale over those from salt water. In fact back when BUC was the standard pricing guide for the industry they employed a scale to be applied to the standard used boat "book" prices in their guides. Fresh water boats were generally 10% over book value, and boats in southern salt areas were worth below book value. This tool recognized the fact that salt water and climate have a definite negative impact on the condition of a vessel and its components. The effect of salt water and air, and extensive exposure to year-round southern sunlight is a topic for another day, we are talking about pricing here. What has changed over time is that fresh water boats are now generally priced similarly to salt water boats in most cases. They shouldn't be, but they are, which makes a fresh water boat a better deal overall. Why is this so? We would postulate that the economic regions hardest-hit have been on the Great Lakes, where supply and demand forces have kept prices down. The declining population in these areas is another factor. We always shake our heads when someone brings an old salty up here when better boats are available closer to home.
“Attitude” gets Hauled, by Rick Lenard: Today was a sad day! Yes, the day I took off the sails on our 1972 Hughes 38 “Attitude”, in preparation of hauling out for the end of the season. Our marina in Buffalo is so well protected and has floating docks, it's ok to stay in longer than other sites. The government run marinas throw you out October 15, here at Skyway we get to sail for 2-4 weeks longer in the fall. We also get in earlier in the spring!
Pulling out the Genoa on the roller furling and dropping the halyard on a calm morning, it folded neatly on its own on the deck. On to the mainsail; cover off, releasing the outhaul, opening the track joint and pulling the slides out it too folded itself with the sail ties retied over the boom. Darren help me carry them to the lawn where we pulled the battens and carefully folded them and placed them in the bags ready for next year. Seems it wasn't that long ago they were hoisted in anticipation for another sailing season. One thing I noticed was the lack of spiders and spider poop! This summer I was extra vigilant by spraying Home Defense on the dock posts, lines, fenders and toe rail. I also sprayed inside the turnbuckles, the front of the mast and back of the boom. There's nothing harder to remove than spider poop from your sails! I highly recommend this process. It makes your significant other happy when you raise the main and itsey bitsey fails to come dangling down in her lap!
I then taped the mainsail battens together and placed them in the v-berth so there's no scrambling around next spring trying to remember where they went!
Tomorrow morning, we'll pull the mast and then the boat. I have a list of winter projects and upgrades to tackle. The winter is for planning and projects. It's also for dreaming of warm summer cruises and the memories of good times to come.
Until next year---
Rick
New Boats News:
Winter Indoor Shopping: We’ve been doing a lot of clean up at our Youngstown showroom recently in order to make space for some really nice boats that warrant indoor heated storage. We already brought in a Sabre Spirit (36ft), a Trophy 19 center console powerboat, and two J/70’s on trailers. As the weather turns a bit more, we will have the new C&C 30 One Design, our demo J/88 and a Back Cove 30. Talk about selection! If you are interested in any of the above, this winter will be a good time to come in and do some warm indoor shopping in Youngstown. Besides, don’t most people start their holiday shopping now anyway?

New J/112e, ready for Spring 2015 launch! While at the Annapolis Boat Show, we spoke with Jeff and Al Johnstone about this new design. They were excited about their latest new baby. It has a somewhat higher freeboard for headroom and a cruising interior, a bit different than most of the recent J models we are used to seeing. It still maintains the fine handling and performance traits of other J’s.

New First 35 Carbon Edition Sailboat - By Beneteau: For almost forty years, the performance and elegance of Firsts have regularly enabled their owners to shine on the water and win prestigious regattas.
With the 2015 season comes the Carbon Edition. New features include a carbon mast, rod rigging, a retractable carbon sprit, new graphics and a three position pivoting wheel. The interior woodwork is beautiful, they really did a nice job with this version.

Please disregard the “slow” sign, that is intended for cars in the yard and not in any way reflecting the sailing ability of the boat! Maybe we should have moved the sign?? By the way, the keel is shown semi-retracted for transport and storage.

Flea Market & Small Boat Place:
NEW Carbon Fiber Spinnaker Pole (without end fittings): Was purchased for a Beneteau 36.7 as a spare spinnaker pole. Selling for $1000, retail is nearly double that price. Call Jim Egloff at 716-525-3228 or email jim@rcryachts.com
NEW North Sails Asymmetrical Spinnaker with Sock: Great shape, basically brand new. Made for a Newport 27S. I tried it out on my Newport 27mkII and it fit great.
