DBSA Annual Poetry Night: A Great Success
By Huei-Yi Pan-Dempsey
My experience with the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Poetry Night here at the San Antonio Clubhouse on October 8, 2014 was very awesome.
I read my own poem called
Jesus Is My Rock, and I heard some other awesome poetry read by others such as Nathan, JoJo, Carroll, Kathi, and Irene. I felt good about writing my own poem for this event because I have been writing poetry in general since I was about fourteen years old. Eli liked the event, and thinks we should do this event more often instead of just once per year. It is good to write poetry because it is good therapy. Hearing meaningful poetry being read is also therapeutic as well. When I read my poem, I could tell that people liked it because everyone was smiling, and Jen was smiling directly at me after I got done reading my poem.
I loved it when Nathan helped JoJo by reading his poems, and it was done with such feeling. Nathan was very entertaining. JoJo seemed to be having fun too. Another thing I liked about Poetry Night was the food and the ticket drawings for the prizes. Maria gave me a shiny ornament since she already won one, I won a 500 piece puzzle, and a wooden puzzle with little balls in it with flowers pictured in it so I could try to get the little balls in the center of the flowers. Irene had written a very good Christian poem about the Clubhouse, and I really loved it. I ate some of the apple pie, cheese curls, crackers with brie and jelly, and some servings of the lasagna.
This event will be one that I will forever remember for the rest of my life. I still have the copy of the poem that I wrote. I hope to frame it up and put it on the wall in the bedroom. The Clubhouse is THE PLACE to be!!!

Clubhouse Tree Mural: Different Branches, One Experience
By Nathan Tuttle
They say that first impressions are the most important. At the San Antonio Clubhouse, our first impression just got even better. Behind the Reception Desk as you walk in is a beautiful tree mural – a project a couple of months in the works. It started as a seed of an idea, took root, and then branched out into a full-fledged clubhouse creative undertaking (okay, no more tree puns).
The project actually came out of a meeting of three or four members and staff to spruce up the Reception area. The initial idea was just to paint a tree, but quickly evolved into creating a clubhouse family tree of sorts. Members and staff envisioned a tree that would have pictures of members on it. But unlike most family trees, the people on it would not stay there permanently. Instead, member pictures would rotate regularly so that every part of our ever-growing family would be represented at some point.
“It is a privilege to contribute my time and effort towards something that will be there as long as the building is around,” says Linda W. who has taken the lead on the painting. Linda says that the tree “adds beauty to the building, and it creates a feeling of togetherness. We are a family, why not have a family tree? Even if we are on different branches we all share common experiences.”
The next step for the tree project is to add the frames and photos – stop by to see the final product later this month!
Member Profile: Kayla Byrd
By Mikey Viera
Kayla on Halloween 2014
My name is Mikey and I am interviewing our member, Kayla Byrd today.
Kayla was born in Spring, Texas and has been a member of the San Antonio Clubhouse for five years. Currently, Kayla works at Blanco BBQ. When she’s not at the clubhouse or working, you can find Kayla enjoying one of her many hobbies: singing, fitness, or volunteering. Kayla’s favorite food is pizza, and she is sure to have some at least once per week.
Some of Kayla’s other favorites include her favorite song “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift, her favorite movie “Grown-Ups 2,” and her favorite TV shows – any medical show, but especially Grey’s Anatomy. We are so glad that Kayla is a member of our clubhouse. If you don’t already know Kayla, you should talk with her – she’s super friendly!
Spurs Corner: Home Opener Preview and Season Prediction
By Stephen Reinert
The Spurs will be at home tonight to receive their rings and raise their banner to the ceiling to celebrate last year’s championship. The champs will play without their Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, who will be out with an eye infection.
The Spurs will, however, have Becky Hammon (from South Dakota) on the sideline, the first ever full-time female assistant coach in NBA history. My prediction for this game is a Spurs win over the Mavericks with a final score of 98-90.
I also predict that the Spurs will finish the regular season with a 51-10 record.
