#3 - Baby Steps

In our last issue, I was delighted to let you know about some big news related to raising awareness about Sensory Processing Sensitivity. This time our news are of more modest in nature, but perhaps even more relevant to some of you, as it is about HSP related happenings closer to home.

Nature Does Not HurryFirstly, I can let you know that Barbara Allen-Williams is currently applying for getting an approved status with a therapeutic body for the professional trainings run by the National Centre for High Sensitivity (NCHS). She has been given some encouraging feedback about the possibility of this, so hopefully it takes just a little more time before our trainings can count towards your professional CPD requirements.

You can also see in our listings here, that slowly but surely, we are trying to increase the areas in the UK, where you can join HSP Meetups or training events. Barbara is planning to start new, roughly 3-monthly HSP Meetups in Devon and the Nottingham area early next year. Maybe over time, we could also start looking for facilitators, who could help to run these Meetups more regularly. For now, we are just looking for you to register your interest for these events, to help us know how many to cater for.

Another good news is that the long-awaited launch of the redesigned NCHS website is coming a bit closer, as the design is ready now and we just need to fill it up with useful information about high sensitivity. Hopefully, the website will become soon a very useful resource for all HSPs in the UK. Whether you are just discovering about the HSP trait or ready to take your own baby steps toward becoming a more empowered HSP - we are hoping to guide and support you on your journey of growth with carefully selected information.

But for now, here is our current listings of events from the UK (and nearby) and our usual HSP-related selection of articles. Hope you'll find some things to spark your interest.

Are you a Highly Sensitive Person?

Ane Axford writes with insight about her journey as a Highly Sensitive Person and shares some valuable realizations along the way that helped her making friends with her sensitivity. I wouldn't be surprised, if many of you would resonate with her idea, that HSPs view the hierarchy of their needs somewhat differently to the majority of people. We can often focus on higher aims before more basic needs are sufficiently catered for. Perhaps, it's not all that surprising, since we often have been taught from early on to ignore our real needs - by labeling us 'too sensitive', when we expressed them. We could all benefit however from reconsidering what is a basic need for us, as an HSP. Trusting our body about this could be a good place to start.

For some HSPs Less can be More

As we are heading towards finishing another year, taking stock can be useful. The world is changing around us at a seemingly accelerated rate and our lives are getting more and more complex. There seems to be an increasing gap between what our culture advertise as norm and what is realistically achievable or beneficial - especially for most of us HSPs. Maybe it's a good thing that we are not cut out for working longer and longer hours in the corporate world and that it is simply not an option for many of us to buy into everything that is seen "essential" these days. Elaine Aron's article can be a rather timely reminder to all of us about this. The lives we create to survive in our increasingly disconnected and unhealthy world could turn out to be an inspiration to all people, and not just HSPs.

Understanding the Introverted

I love this quirky little guide about introversion by Schroeder Jones. Perhaps it's even useful for those 30% of HSPs, who are extroverted, since they also have to watch their energy spent on interactions. Share it liberally with anyone who could do with understanding a bit more about our tendency to be more selective about relationships.

Surviving Party Dread

The so called "party season" is getting close once again. I thought Nick Black's good old rant is a rather fitting expression of how many HSPs feel about that. Ok, he doesn't have lots of survival tips to share - other than escape, as soon as you can ;-) Still, a part of me was lifted by simply seeing a fully expressed alternative view about Xmas Dos, and parties in general. Should you feel that you need some extra ammunition to prepare you for the Holidays, Elaine Aron sums up wonderfully her tips about surviving this time of the year. You may even want to delve into Peter Messerschmidt in-depth exploration about what can make a difference for HSPs.
