The Singapore St Andrew’s Society e-news: November/December 2014

chieftain’s message

Goodness, how time flies. One minute I am welcoming members back after the summer break and the next I am looking at Christmas decorations on Orchard Road.

It has been a fun-filled couple of months, the highlight of which was our fabulous ceilidh featuring the energetic and chart-topping Whisky Kiss.

Onward and upward, so we look forward to dazzling you with our fabulous Feast of St Andrew’s Saltire Ball at the Shangri-La Hotel on Friday, 28th November.

The band is booked, the menu is set and the tickets are flying off the shelves. But there is still time to gather your friends, come to Thursday night dance practices and book your seats to join in the fun. If working the little grey cells is more your kind of thing, don’t miss out on our fun quiz night on Friday, 7th November at the Tanglin Club.

Look forward to seeing you at one of Society events soon...

Yours Aye

whisky evening review

There were 14 imbibers and six brave souls (one brave lady) willing to shred their reputations in a blind whisky tasting. Before proceedings commenced, the sober people donated a significant sum to support the breast cancer foundation.

Six whiskies were tasted and seven possible labels with tasting notes provided. The whiskies came from Scotland, England, Germany and USA. So to say that reputations were at stake is perhaps a stretch since names such as Slyrs and Hicks & Healey don't trip off the tongue. At the other end of the spectrum were Famous Grouse, The Glenlivet and The Macallan, Gentleman Jack and Bowmore (Black Rock).

The palates were "baselined" with a well described Johnnie Walker 12 yo and we were off. Alison provided some cold fayre as well as haggis and champit tatties to help line the stomachs. Paul Gelardi was our clear winner and took home a bottle of Grants "smallest bottle of whisky". Another prize went to Mette Buttar for the best description of one of the whiskies. Most of the descriptions were unprintable. On a side note, each whisky was rated out of 10 and the clear winner (top score and lowest price) was The Famous Grouse.

Yours hic...
