Transportation Bond:  Why We Voted "No"

Dear Forsyth HOA & Homeowners Members,

Tuesday November 4, 2014.  VOTE TODAY - We believe that informed citizens make the best decisions.

$200,000,000 Transportation Bond

Many of you received glossy cards in the mail, emails, and phone calls asking you to vote "yes" on the Transportation Bond. The mailer was full of inaccuracies and misleading statements, which prompted the county to have to post this on their website in response:

**The county has been made aware of certain informational material distributed by a private entity suggesting that if the transportation bond is approved by the voters certain state or federal funding will become available. Please note that the county cannot guarantee the availability of any non-county funding.

Since then, we discovered the mailer was funded by the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce "Business First" leadership.  This council happens to have members who have been profiting from increased density housing developments.  A member of this council is our own County Commission Chair, Pete Amos.  Chairman Amos just had the largest zoning this county has seen in years approved by his fellow Commissioners.  It allowed for higher density housing, and threw out all of the commercial requirement of the Master Planned Development he requested in his application.

The Homeowners Coalition and thousands of Forsyth homeowners ask one simple question about the $200,000,000 proposed road improvement plan and bond:

Why fix gridlocked roads, crowded schools, and an increasingly overtaxed county infrastructure, when elected officials will not vote to correct the causes?  It is like standing in a boat, bailing out the water, when there is still a hole in the bottom of the boat.

We chose to vote NO, until officials commit to correcting the root causes of our infrastructure woes:
  • Not following the UDC and the Land Use Plan,
  • Allowing rampant growth from excessive rezonings and higher residential densities,
  • Refusing to demand that developers pay higher county impact fees to offset the cost of the growth from their developments.
  • Ignoring the overcrowded roads and schools from the rampant growth until crisis events force more public financing to be paid by citizens.

How much of the $200 million will be wasted?

THE GOOD NEWS: If homeowners vote NO on the bond, it will provide the County an unprecedented opportunity to change the future of Forsyth County. It will allow the BOC to introduce a bond to alleviate gridlock on our roads with county agreement to implement a plan for moderate and balanced residential growth. There are other funding options as well.

The Homeowner’s Coalition stands ready to work with officials to correct problems in Forsyth and create an environment that allows all to work together for the same goals.
