December/January Newsletter:  Tangled up in Holiday Stress?

Winter is considered a yin season, a time for rest and conserving energy. Yet many of us spend the holidays doing just the opposite, burning our much needed yang energy and amongst the shopping, holiday parties, and visiting with loved ones, we inevitably forget to slow down and take care of ourselves.

Find some balance this holiday season by following these 3 simple tips to help realign yourself with the yin nature of winter, untangle the body and mind, and keep stress to a minimum.
1) Breathe.  The breath can be a powerful tool, and one that is often forgotten. Yogis have used the practice of pranayama, or breath control, for thousands of years to alter their state of consciousness, and so can we. When holiday stress becomes overwhelming, remember to simply stop and breathe. Send the breath down into your lower abdomen, expanding the belly evenly in all directions on your inhalation and releasing on your exhalation. Keeping the body and breath free of tension, consciously slow the breath and gradually lengthen the exhalation to further relax the nervous system. (See Pranayama Practices for Stress, Anxiety, and Depression for more on various pranayama practices...)

2) Rub your ears.  Hundreds of acupuncture points are known to exist on the external ear, and can be stimulated to elicit a therapeutic response and alleviate health conditions in other parts of the body. Rub the entire outer ear for an overall calming effect or use at-home ear seed kits to learn to target specific points associated with stress and anxiety. (Read more on auricular acupuncture...)

3) Restore yourself.  Bring your body into a state of waking relaxation with Restorative Yoga. Viparita Karani, or "Legs-Up-The-Wall" Pose, is a simple yet powerful restorative pose which can be practiced for general stress relief and it’s calming effects on the mind and body. It can also lower blood pressure, and will leave your legs feeling refreshed after those long shopping outings or being on your feet all night at your friend's holiday party. (For more information on this pose, including how to set up, see the article Upside Down by Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., PT, one of the the most highly respected and well known Restorative Yoga teachers in the West.
