Pledge Drive 2014-2015 Above and Beyond...
With less than two weeks left, there is still a lot of work to do! Thank you to everyone who has pledged so far. To date, we have raised nearly $265k which represents 66% of our goal & only 33% participation.
Last year we raised nearly $375,000 and had close to 60% participation. If the Pledge Drive ended today, we would fall well short of last year's results. More importantly, because of our success last year, we were able to fully fund 100% of administration's wish list. Unfortunately, if we fall short of our fundraising goals, our children will miss out on critical elements that make Oscar Mayer so special.
If you are reading this and you haven't pledged yet, please stop, look at your children for a moment and ask yourself: doesn't my child deserve the best education? What priority in my life is more important than my child's education? Many of you pledged last year but have yet to this year.
Please show your support today!

2014 Oscar Mayer Blanket Project
Wednesday, December 17, 2014
Student Council invites you to the 2014 Oscar Mayer Blanket Project to benefit the Chicago chapter of the Project Linus.
The Project Linus is a non-profit organization that provides homemade blankets to children in need. We are asking for donations of 2 pieces of 1.5 yards of kid friendly colored/patterned fleece. If you are unable to get the fleece but would like to make a cash donation to help purchase more fleece and supplies for the blanket making project, then please send the money in an envelope to school with your child with your name, your child’s name and the words blanket donation on the outside of the envelope.
Donations of fabric or money will be accepted now through December 12th.
The Blanket Project will take place on Wednesday, December 17th throughout the school day. Parents who are interested in volunteering should contact Jill Kittinger at javandehei@cps.edu.
For more information on the Project Linus please visit their website http://www.projectlinus.org/.

Book Drive
This week kicks off the Mayer Book Drive from December 1st through December 8th to benefit Bernie’s Book Bank. Simply bring in a bag of new or gently used books and they will either be collected from your car in the moving sidewalk those mornings or from your child’s classroom. (No workbooks, textbooks or reference books, please.) We’re trying to collect 2,500 books — so every one counts!
Bernie’s Book Bank serves more than 60,000 at-risk children in the greater Chicagoland area and distributed more than 1 million books last year.
Greater Chicago Food Depository Kids Day
Building on the success of our school-wide food drive, 7 Mayer families volunteered at the Greater Chicago Food Depository Kids Day in November. They spent the afternoon repacking 117 cases of rice, which amounted to 1,404 bags and 4,200 lbs to be delivered to a variety of locations. The volunteers also learned what "food insecurity" is and how their contribution helps the 1 in 5 children and 1 in 6 elderly and adults around Cook County who don't know where their next meal is coming from.
Stay tuned for information on other family-friendly volunteer projects in December and January.

Moving Sidewalk Volunteers Needed
We do not have enough volunteers to be able to run an efficient moving sidewalk so we need your help!
The moving sidewalk is critical in that it helps get the children into school SAFELY while getting parents and caregivers off to where they are going in a efficient and timely manner.
We need volunteers for both morning (8:00-8:40) and afternoon (3:15-3:45) for second quarter (November 10 - January 29). If you are interested in volunteering please email Amy Zemnick, the Moving Sidewalk Coordinator at amyzem77@yahoo.com and remember to specify day and AM or PM shift. Thank you!

Chicken Update
Our newest chickens have successfully bonded with our existing flock! We had no idea how many different opinions there were about how to integrate the chickens so we kind of did a little of everything and it worked. We free ranged the entire flock together as much as we could so that they could get used to each other. We kept them separated at night and yes, we did see a little aggression from our older hens but that is all part of the nature: they don't call it a pecking order for nothing and that is what the hens were doing....establishing who is the boss. But after two weeks, they seem to be completely at ease with each other and they are all sleep on the roosting bar together. They are also fine with this cold weather. All four breeds are winter hardy so they have been bred to withstand the freezing cold. And our coop is super insulated so they are pretty cozy in there. Chicken naming contest begins soon! We have three chickens to name so start getting creative!
