Annual Meeting and Reception

In the News

* In 1807, a visitor described Broad Street in Boston as containing, "sixty warehouses of uniform exterior, four stories high" that illustrated the city's position as a leading port on the Eastern Seaboard during the first half of the 19th century. Today, only two of these warehouses remain, both of which are attributed to renowned architect Charles Bulfinch. One has been preserved as part of Folio Boston, a mixed-use development completed in 2009. The other is now being preserved in conjunction with a new development on the corner of Broad Street and the Greenway. The warehouse building will be rehabilitated as lobby space for a new residential development, requiring the demolition of an adjoining building and the design of a new building that coherently and appropriately communicates with the Bulfinch warehouse and the surrounding historic structures. The Alliance is working with the architect, Finegold Alexander, to finalize a design that contributes to this important, historic street.

Rendering provided by Finegold Alexander. The proposed project is represented by the building on the right.

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Founded in 1870, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), opened the doors of its Copley Square building to the public on July 4, 1876, later moving to its present Huntington Avenue location, which opened on November 9, 1909. The MFA welcomes approximately one million visitors each year from neighboring communities and around the globe.  It is one of the great encyclopedic art museums in the world, with collections comprising more than 500,000 objects representing all periods and cultures.

The MFA’s mission is to serve a wide variety of people—from schoolchildren to adults—through direct encounters with works of art.  In addition to housing renowned collections, the Museum also offers numerous exhibitions and opportunities for learning and community engagement. Underscoring this mission in recent years has been the Museum’s major expansion and renovation project, which has increased and enhanced space for the MFA’s collection, exhibitions, educational programs, and conservation facilities. Please visit mfa.org for more information about the Museum.

With new leadership there is always change, and the evolution of staff and roles at Boston City Hall is no exception. Recently there have been changes in the staff who regulate and manage historic resources in the City. Ellen Lipsey, Director of the Boston Landmarks Commission, and Nancy Girard, Commissioner of the Environment, are no longer working at City Hall.  Brian Swett, Chief of Environmental & Energy Services, will be departing at the end of the year.

The Alliance has enjoyed working with this team over the years and appreciate the many accomplishments we achieved together, in particular Ellen, who was in that role for over two decades. We wish them all the best in their new endeavors.

We look forward to working with the new team once it is in place. Austin Blackmon has been named as the new Chief of Environment and Energy.

Date and Location: To be announced soon!

Bringing together our members at a fun and unique space in Boston to hear a dynamic speaker as well as briefly partake in the year-in-review-business of our Annual Meeting is a yearly tradition. This year we are firming up plans for an enhanced and expanded Annual Meeting with more networking and reception time and now to occur in late winter, after we cross into 2015.

We look forward to seeing you all at this important event on Boston's preservation calendar. Stay tuned for event details including our speaker and venue!

This event will be for members only, so now is a great time to join or renew your membership with the Alliance and be a part of Boston's leading advocacy nonprofit for historic preservation.
