On May 17, 2014, I officially graduated from my osteopathic program at Collège d'Études Ostéopathiques de Montréal, Vancouver campus. Thesis results were presented and accepted! Phew! It has been 9 years since I started the program and I'm so happy that I finished it. I was able to enjoy the summer, relax with friends and relatives, and recuperate from the marathon study sessions and writing.
This mean that I also have my official designation as a D.O.M.P., aka: Diploma of Osteopathy, Manual Practitioner. This is to differentiate our training from the Osteopathic Physicians trained in the US. I also have my number for insurance purposes and am able to write receipts as a D.O.M.P, as well as an RMT.
Insurance companies with osteopathic coverage are an actual thing. Check with your individual plan to see if you have coverage.
Courses: Continuing education is another way to stay connected to classmates and new tools to add to my toolbox. (As if I don't have enough!) Learning more is my way to keep my brain active and engaged. With bodywork, its never ending and I love that!
In Montreal I studied with one my favorite instructors from the college, and learned more about trauma from injuries to the brain and spinal cord in a class called Endocranial Spasms. So if you know of anyone with head trauma, concussions, old or new, I'm inspired to work with them to help the recovery process.
How well do you breathe? Are you using your diaphragm or your shoulders? The former is best of course. Do you breathe through your nose all the time? Do you find yourself inhaling through your mouth? Is your throat dry in the morning? I've recently taken a workshop with Chris Bauman: www.breathinglady.com, and she has helped re-establish a better breathing pattern after years of anxiety and burning the candle at both ends. Its not over after the workshop though, I have to keep it up daily! But I do feel an inner calm that I have not felt in years. Just another class to improve myself, with informative tips to help me with your treatment sessions that I can pass on you.
Yoga continues to inspire me and keep me flexible and strong. Well, when I do it! Here in Victoria, yoga studios and community centers provide a plethora of workshops and classes. www.yellowyogi.com has a great calendar that shows all the classes going on at any one time. There are at least 25 classes per day here! So no excuses...take a deep breath and attend one!
Nordic Pole walking with Linda of http://nordicpolewalkingvictoria.ca/. She is very inspirational and does intro sessions every month as well as motivational workouts with specific goals such as pole walking some of the big 10K, half, and full marathons here in Victoria. Its very efficient utilizing 90% of your muscles with every stride. Check it out if you need to bump up your workouts. The weather here this fall has been perfect for it!
