I. News and Announcements


Shakala Alvaranga, a broadcaster with ABC 40, will stop by Prof. Mary Carey's Journ 300 class from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in ILC room S413. All are invited.

• If you are a student in Journalism 301 or in an upper-level writing course (Sports Journalism, Reporting for Radio & Podcasting, Community Journalism, Broadcast News Reporting, Writing About Pop Culture, Magazine Writing, Broadcast Performance, Broadcast News Reporting II, Diaries, Memoirs & Journals) please help the Journalism Department assess Journ 300 by taking this short survey. We want your feedback about this class as we move forward. Thank you!

• Amherst Cinema is currently screening "Citizenfour," the story of the encounters that filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald had with Edward Snowden in Hong Kong. A list of show times for this week can be found here.

• Come watch student teams pitch their business ideas and compete for a portion of the $10,000 in prize money at the 2014 UMass Innovation Challenge Executive Summary and Elevator Pitch Competition at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Cape Cod Lounge. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

• Interested in being the 2015 Student Commencement Speaker? If so, submit a two-page, double-spaced copy of a speech to Stephanie Subocz of the Student Speaker Selection Committee by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015.

II. Jobs, Internships and Scholarships


• Do you know a graduating senior who has displayed strong leadership skills throughout his or her career at UMass? The university is seeking nominations of graduating seniors for the 21st Century Leaders Award. Up to ten students will be awarded $1,000 each from the UMass Amherst Alumni Association.

III. Advising Information


• You can now enroll for online courses offered during Spring '15. Journalism is offering five courses: Journ 300: Newswriting and Reporting, Journ 333: Introduction to Digital Photojournalism, Journ 335: principles of Public Relations, Journ 445: Journalism and Law, Journ 497E: Health Journalism. These classes are not covered by tuition and cost extra. They do count toward your normal, on-the-ground Journalism major.

• Thanksgiving recess begins after the last class on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Classes will resume on Monday, Dec. 1.


• Sophomores, juniors and seniors should consider enrolling in Journ 497G: Journalism Launchpad with Prof. BJ Roche. This five-week course meets once a week and covers the following topics: discovering what you love, finding the jobs that match your passion and skills, creating a resume, portfolio and LinkedIn profile, and more.

• Career Services is organizing a Non-Profit Career Fair from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Cape Cod Lounge of the Student Union. Students can meet with non-profits and other socially conscious organizations to discuss full time job opportunities, summer job opportunities, and internships. 
 

• Experiencing some end-of-semester stress? There will be free food, yoga, massages, and more from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, in the Student Union Ballroom.

V. Alumni and Faculty News

• Mary Reines ('14) was recently named Arts and More editor at the Swampscott and Marblehead Reporters. Reines will write weekly features on arts and culture, as well as organize and edit submissions from the community.

• Prof. Shaheen Pasha was interviewed by 22 News for a segment titled "Obama Administration Reviews Hostage Situations." 

• Life Sciences alumni are invited to attend the Boston Alumni Event from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Cambridge Brewing Company for a Beer Sampling Social. The event will launch a Life Sciences Alumni Network scholarship for UMass students and will include drinks, food, and raffle prizes. Those interested in attending should register here.
