 GIVING TUESDAY!

DECEMBER 2, 2014

Giving Tuesday is coming on December 2, 2014.  If you wish to make a special on-line donation to MMH, this is an amazing opportunity to potentially double your donation to Maua Methodist Hospital's various Advance Special Funds.

But there are some catches, so here are a few things you need to know!

1.  This will be a first come-first matched donation opportunity.  Last year the matching funds were gone by 12:04 AM.  We were told the following by the General Board of Global Ministries, and pass it on to you!

  •      The clock used is on atomic clock time, and is for Eastern Standard Time...other time zones must adjust accordingly;
  •      Go on-line as close to a second after midnight as possible, and make your donation;
  •      Even if your gift is not matched you will be part of one of the most amazing days of giving to help others in the name of Christ EVER!!!
It is also important to note that donations for Individual Volunteers, the gifts that help Sue and me do what we do, will not be matched on Giving Tuesday, for reasons related to IRS rules and regulations.

But all of the other Maua Methodist Hospital, Z.O.E. and related Advance Specials will be matched, with the understanding that it is first come - first served.

Whether you make the call at midnight (atomic clock - EST) and make it part of the matching, or miss by a few seconds or hours, the important thing is that this will be a day of unprecedented giving to global causes through The United Methodist Church!

Merchants have what they call "Black Friday", and bless them all - it keeps the economy going!

But we United Methodists and Friends of Maua can have a "Light Tuesday", in which the light of Christ is shone into every corner and every soul.

Here is a list of the hospital's Advance Specials!

1.  ADVANCE SPECIAL # 09613A – Maua Hospital Service Fund.  The Service Fund covers the medical costs of those who cannot pay, thus ensuring the hospital an even cash flow. Without this fund the hospital would risk sinking. If you don't know which one to choose, this is the one!!!
2.  ADVANCE SPECIAL # 982023 - ZOE Ministries ZOE HOPE COMPANIONS – In the hospital’s catchment area over 40,000 children are orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.  Many children are the heads of household.  ZOE Hope Companions gives direction, support, and assistance to those young heads-of-household! We now reach over 10,000 orphans!
3.  ADVANCE SPECIAL # 140161 – AIDS Orphans’ Project, Maua Methodist Hospital. AIDS ORPHANS’ FEEDING AND EDUCATION SUPPORT provides food, medical care, school uniforms and supplies, to AIDS orphans too young for Z.O.E. programs   This fund gives the children the back-up support they need not just to survive, but thrive. This is also where we house the funds for building AIDS Orphan homes!
4.  ADVANCE SPECIAL # 140159 – Maternal and Child Health ProgramThe MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM offers pre-natal, post-natal, and well-baby care for the Maua community, including  AIDS counseling, testing, child growth monitoring and immunizations.
5.  ADVANCE SPECIAL # 09610A – Operation Outreach, Maua, Kenya OPERATION OUTREACH provides outreach!  Community health clinics, de-worming of children, training in remote villages happen because of this fund!  It is a preventative medicine/intervention arm of the hospital.
6.  ADVANCE SPECIAL # 140160 – AIDS Time InitiativeAIDS – TIME INITIATIVE is a fund that gives the hospital’s Community Health Clinic the resources it needs to go to the surrounding area and tackle the pandemic of AIDS!  While the reporting of AIDS is up the rate of new infections is believed to be declining –because of programs like this!

Your prayers, as well as your gifts, are welcomed for all of these worthy causes!  Give on Giving Tuesday on-line at www.umcmission.org

UPDATE ON JIM AND SUE, AND JIM' HEALTH

On a personal note, Sue and I would kind of like to have a do-over of November.

On October 29, Sue's mom, Bette Owen, died of lymphoma.  We thought it was in a manageable place, but it overwhelmed her and she has now found peace with God.  Two and a half weeks later my mom, Pat Monroe, died following a long decline.  Not so unexpected, but still a shock.  She, too, is now at peace with God.

In the middle of all of this, following up on my annual physical, we discovered a lesion on my right kidney, about the size of a dime.  The urologist said there was a 50-50 chance of it being malignant, although it appears to have signs of blood circulation; a marker for cancer.

So sometime in early December I will have surgery to remove the lesion.  Malignant or not, I just want the dang thing gone!

Fortunately is has been caught early enough that we will not need to take the kidney or follow up with chemo or radiation.  But it will delay our return to Kenya in late November.

We are bound and determined, however, to be back home in Maua by the week of Christmas.

Prayers appreciated.

Hmmm.....early detection.....mothers released from earthly pain and sharing with family and friends of days gone by....maybe we'll skip the do-over.  Still, been rather stressful.......

In the next few weeks, probably while recuperating from surgery, I will send out an update on the Ft. Worth Gathering of the Friends of Maua!  An amazing two days, and the first of many future gatherings!!!!

Bwana Asifiwe,
Jim, and Sue, too

ONE LAST NOTE:  Remember that I am no longer on the Individual Volunteer list, due to my position at the hospital.

If you wish to support Sue's work, still do so through the IV ADVANCE SPECIAL 982465.

If you wish to support my work, then do so through the Service Fund, ADVANCE SPECIAL # 09613A.

In either case, please be sure to designate us by name so it is routed appropriately.  THANK YOU!
