Happy Thanksgiving

From your friends at

Nautilus Architects

Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow.

— Edward Sandford Martin

Don't think you'd like black window frames?  Think again! Note too the "floating" open shelves.

All three primary spaces- living, dining and kitchen- enjoy a great view.

Even on the dreariest of days, a glassy expanse of this scale brightens the interior.

The charming seaside hamlet of Noank is not where you'd expect to find such a contemporary interior, but that's just where these photos were taken.  Not far from the Morgan Point Lighthouse, the glassy walls afford a panoramic view of Ram Island, Mason's Island and Watch Hill, as boats from the Mystic River sail by in the foreground.  It's given me a better appreciation for the value of an easterly exposure: spectacular sunrises and lessened concerns about solar heat gain.

Went to see a Groucho Marx revue at the Katherine Hepburn Center recently.  What a show!  It reminded me why he was a hero of mine growing up: making people laugh is one of life's great joys.

This is my favorite tree: the cryptomeria.  Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but whenever I suggest it to a client they do their research, look at images, and fall in love.  A handsome evergreen, grows quickly, is deer resistant. Tolerates all soil types, fine in sun or shade (doesn't like marine environments). And, the root ball is so small you can bring a 6 footer home in your trunk.
