The Advent Season

As we anticipate new birth of the Christ, let us prepare room in our own hearts and lives. Please join us for prayer gatherings, consider taking Advent online classes, or participating in weekly devotionals or through social media.

Praying Our Way Through Advent
Ledlie will guide a morning of meditation with Holy Scripture at The Church of St. Luke and the Epiphany at 330 South 13th Street from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday morning December 13. Also join Ledlie at St. Peter’s House at 313 Pine Street on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. throughout Advent for guided meditation. Read more

Online Classes
There are two new classes available: Advent for Families and Introduction to Advent. Click here to sign in for the school or learn more.

Downloadable Advent Devotionals

Advent Lectionary Reflection
Join the Formation missioners of The Episcopal Church on a photo meditation through the Season of Advent. Each day a word for reflection, taken from the Sunday lectionary readings, will be posted on social media sites. Meditate on the word, then find a photo that embodies that word. Post the photo on social media with the hashtag “#episcopaladvent” as well as a hashtag for the word for the day (for example, “#joy”). Posting will begin on the first Sunday of Advent and conclude on Christmas Day.
Participate on Twitter @episcoyouth and Facebook facebook.com/EpiscoYouth.

Peter and Paula Will Move to St. Stephen's Church in Virginia

St. Peter's Music Director Peter Hopkins has accepted the invitation to serve as Director of Music at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia. Thus, after eleven years of glorious music-making at Saint Peter’s, Peter and Paula will be leaving us. January 18, the Feast of the Confession of Peter, will be their last Sunday at St. Peter's.

During their time here, Peter and Paula have filled our worship with music, built and nurtured a marvelous choral program, and touched the lives of oh so many of us. Thanks to their passion, faith, guidance, and skill, our worship is an expression of the finest Anglican choral tradition. We will miss them!

With support from our Vestry and Music Committee, I will act quickly to put together an interim team of musicians. Details will be forthcoming, but fear not; with support from each of you, all shall be well.

Click here to read Peter and Paula's letter to the congregation and to learn more about St. Peter's plans in the interim.

Angels (and a few cows, shepherds, sheep and donkeys) we have heard on high...

By the Rev. Claire Nevin-Field

It is time to start thinking of angels, shepherds, wise ones, sheep, cows, stars and a manger. Given our track record over the last few years, we should also think about cheetahs, mallards and unicorns. Not always sticking exactly to the characters found in Luke’s Christmas story, but always a heartfelt outpouring of joy over the birth of Jesus, our annual Christmas pageant will be held during the 5 p.m. service on December 24, Christmas Eve.

The pageant is open to children of all ages. Most parts are non-speaking, but there are a few speaking parts for older children. Rehearsals will be at 10 a.m. on December 21 and at 4:15 p.m. on December 24. For more information or if your child is interested in a speaking part please contact Claire.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Visits Mothers in Charge

By Hannah Poole, St. Peter's parishioner

My nephew was murdered when he was 23. Last week would have been his 30th birthday. Living with the agony of having one family member slaughtered, I can’t imagine the weight of grief on those who have lost their own, whose friends have lost their own, whose community has lost half a generation.

On October 23, Pat Fusco and I (in foreground in photo at right) met some of the women who grieve, when we brought prayer shawls to the Grief Support Group of Mothers In Charge, at the Louis Sullivan Human Service Center. Members of this group have lost a child or grandchild to violence. We gave the shawls to the women in that group, and they gave us their stories. Read more...

Let’s spread some Christmas cheer! Join your neighbors for an evening stroll and Christmas caroling. All ages are welcome. Can’t hold a tune? That’s OK. The group will begin its stroll at 6 p.m. We’ll end at the Twisted Tail at 509 South Second Street where the holiday revelry will continue.

The Way Forward Meetings

10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, December 7
St. Peter's Parish House

Join usfor a conversation about St. Peter's ministries of education and Christian formation. At these meetings, we will ask “what is working well?” and “what do you envision for the future?” The gatherings will be held in the parlor at 313 Pine Street. Additional meetings (part of The Way Forward planning process) are scheduled for January 11. If you are you planning to attend, please call 215-925-5968 or email Lauri at cielo@stpetersphila.org to let us know.

Give a Gift, Save a Life

On Sundays during Advent, you will have the opportunity to purchase a gift in honor of a loved one and support the St. Peter's Food Cupboard, the Guatemala Partnership, and Camp Get-Along, and the Philadelphia Serengeti Alliance. In return for your gift, in addition to knowing you have made a difference in the world, you will get a gift card drawn by our own Connie Moore letting the recipient know a gift has been given in their name.

The Episcopal Way

Sunday December 7 & 14 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s School

What do Episcopalians believe about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit? How do we view the Bible? How and why was the Episcopal Church formed? Why does our worship look the way it does? What is the Anglican Communion? How does one become an Episcopalian? Join Claire for a discussion of these issues and much more. If you were not able to go to the first two sessions it is OK to drop in now as each session is self contained. The Episcopal Way is intended for all who have questions and especially for those who wish to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. For more information contact Claire.

St. Peter's Book Wins Award

The book of St. Peter's Church history titled "St. Peter's Church: Faith in Action for 250 Years" recently was honored with the Laurence D. Fish Parish History Award at the Diocesan Convention. The award was presented by the National Episcopal Historians & Archivists, which encourages churches to collect, preserve and organize their records and share their history. Libby Browne and Cordelia Biddle, pictured below (authors of the book along with Alan J. Heavens and Charles P. Peitz) accepted the award.

The book will be for sale after services on Sunday, December 14, and at the reception after Lesson & Carols on Sunday, December 21.

Call for Vestry Nominations

A note from Jacqueline Lewis: In January I will be stepping down from the vestry after 2 terms. Six years of service, laughs, stewardship, triumphs and travails. (New roof, anybody?) A good portion of that time I also served as your Accounting Warden, fretting about budgets and resource allocation on your behalf. Before that I chaired several Stewardship Campaigns. So believe me when I tell you, St. Peter’s is a singular place, filled with freakishly talented folk who seem always to be in high spirits. Thanks to you, St. Peter’s itself is in fine fettle. The deep talent pool of our parish is matched only by the generosity with which each of you share your time and money. You never cease to amaze and delight me.

The Vestry nominating committee will now reach deep into that talented pool to fill the two open vestry seats. As we plan Our Way Forward, we especially welcome vestry candidates with legal or financial expertise. Moved to serve? Would you care to nominate a fellow parishioner? Please let Greg Duffy or me know. And if approached to stand for Vestry? Please give it your generous and prayerful consideration.  It’s not always an easy job. But I promise you it is a worthy and transformative one. Thank you for your many kindnesses along the way.You are great and I am grateful. Please ring me if you have questions about vestry service, the nominating process, or  just want to bend my ear. 203.675.4095 or via email lewis@stpetersphila.org.

Cheese & Crackers and Always COOKIES!

Please whip up an extra batch of cookies or buy some cheese and crackers for the reception following Lessons and Carols on December 21 at 4 p.m.

Help us to serve up a holiday treat to our guests. The reception is in the auditorium of St. Peter’s School. You can drop of your treat that morning or right before the service at 4 p.m.

Christmas Memorials

At Christmastime you have the opportunity to remember loved ones and to offer special thanks by making a donation to the Music program for brass at Christmas and Easter or to the Flower fund for Christmas greening. Please join us in supporting this important aspect of our common life of worship, our celebration of the birth of Incarnate Love. You can just drop a check in the alms basin on Sunday or put in the mail to 313 Pine. Please write music or flowers on the memo line of the check.

Thank You:

  • Walt Peters for agreeing to chair the Sages starting in January
  • Pat Fusco for her years of leadership of Sages
  • Nora Adelmann for sharing her faith story and for coordinating the Way Forward meetings on Nov. 16
  • Lisa & Robert Di Cicco for hosting the SPPIT+ movie and pizza night on Nov. 7
  • Danny Alvarado & Jamie Wirt for joining the greeter/usher ministry
  • Nancy Fago, Pat Fusco & Gaylord Holder for the latest batch of communion bread
