Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.

                                                                          Henry Ward Beecher

     This Sunday will be a first for me. It will be the first time while I have been your pastor that we will dedicate our pledges on Thanksgiving Sunday. For a variety of seemingly good reasons we have always tried to have this moment of blessing long before Thanksgiving Sunday. We delayed the dedication this year because we wanted members and friends to ask questions and consider raising their pledges by six percent. There have not been too many questions regarding the changes in this year's process. I hope that this is a good indication that our campaign will be a success. All that said, now that Thanksgiving/Pledge Dedication Sunday is upon us I'm baffled. Why have we waited so long to do this. What better Sunday than Thanksgiving Sunday to express our gratitude for the faith and faithfulness of our members and friends.

     From now until Thanksgiving Day we will all be reflecting upon those things for which we are thankful. It is obvious, but for some reason of all the things I am accustomed to mentioning when expressing gratitude, it has never occurred to me  to give thanks for faith. That is, until I read a prayer of invocation written by Maren C. Tirabassi and Joan Jordan Grant.

Gracious God,
we come this morning to seek our own faith -
     the faith that makes us whole;
we come to express our common faith -
     the faith that brings us joy;
we come to give thanks for faith -
     the faith that is a gift from you;
we come to share the faith of others and
     offer with love our faith to them.
Receive us into worship with your welcome of grace.
Amen.

 Last Sunday we celebrated those among us who have lived into their eighties and nineties and those who have been members of this church for over fifty years. During the celebration the word that keep coming to me was faithfulness. Faith is expressed many ways in our lives. The choices we make when things are good and life is grand, the choices we make when things are rough and not going the way we want and the choice to stay committed to our faith and the church community where our faith is lived out.

     Just as our commitment to regularly attend worship, practice spiritual disciplines and be part of a church family are expressions of our faith, so is our pledge. I was overcome with the faithfulness of those we honored and celebrated last Sunday during worship and this coming Sunday I expect to be moved to gratitude and praise for those who financially support our church's operating budget and ministry.

     So I invite you this Sunday to join us for worship and give thanks for your faith. "God has listened to our prayers; when we pass through the torrents of deep troubles, God turns our sea into dry land; when we are entangled in the web-nets of life, God does not let our feet slip; when we are tested as silver is tried, God keeps us in the land of the living; when we go through fire and water, God brings us to a spacious place." Come and worship and and give thanks for God's faithfulness to us.

Want a chance to give thanks to God alongside your friends in the wider Barre community? Friends will be gathering for worship and reflection at St. Monica's Parish at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25th. Members and friends from half a dozen area congregations will sing in the choir and lead worship. Want to Help with Thanksgiving Meal?

The Masonic Lodge in Barre will be hosting a Community Thanksgiving meal again this year. Many folks contact the Lodge to help in the days leading up to the event and that they always end up with lots of volunteers. One of the coordinators said, “What is needed more is people who are willing to come eat and be in fellowship with the people who are guests.” The meal is served at noon on Thanksgiving. Someone wanting to help with cooking and serving should be in touch with the Masons. Their main number is: (802) 223-1883.

ADVENT STUDY

The Messiah

by  Walter Brueggeman

This four-session adult study takes a critical look at the four royal titles used in Isaiah 9:2-7: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Adults will be challenged to learn how the people understood those titles during Jesus' time and discuss how Jesus did or did not fulfill the titles. They will also reflect on how Christians interpret Jesus as representing that title.

Each session will be at the home of a parishioner at 6:30 pm.

The schedule is as follows:

                  CAMPING FOR A CAUSE....

On behalf of the Barre Interfaith Group and Good Samaritan Haven I would like to invite one and all to join me for Camping for a Cause December 12-13, 2014 in downtown Barre, Vermont. This is both a fundraising and awareness-raising event. Participants solicit sponsors who make a donation to Good Samaritan Haven – the goal is for each camper to raise $100 or more. The event details are as follows:

•    5:30-6:30 PM Friday December 12 supper at Hedding United Methodist Church, where      a free supper is served every Friday
•    6:30 PM set up tents on church lawns around City Hall Park in Barre—choose from                Hedding UMC, Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal, Barre Congregational or First          Church in Barre UU. All locations will offer access to rest rooms. (We will provide more        information on cold weather camping for the safety of all participants. Please note:  no            fires allowed.)
•    7:00-7:30 PM First Church in Barre UU for a candlelight vigil  (we ‘ll provide the                  candles).
•    Then we will head to our tents to experience a bit of what some in our community know        all too well—what it is like to be homeless.
•    At 7:30 AM we will have breakfast at Barre Congregational during the regularly                      scheduled Saturday Breakfast. We’ll also take some time to reflect on our experience of          sleeping in the cold.
•    Then, we will conduct a coin drop on Washington Street from 9-12 Noon.

The organizers are hoping for a large crowd at the vigil to raise awareness of the reality of homelessness in our community. We also need lots of folks to help with the coin drop so we can raise much-needed funds for Good Samaritan Haven, central Vermont’s only homeless shelter. I will be one of the campers and would be delighted if others from his church joined me. If you are interested let me know. I do have some extra camping equipment.

Oh yes, I am looking for sponsors.
