We don’t want to brag about our insider info, but… We have seen Santa’s shopping list and the good news is—everything you need for the holidays is in Downtown Fredericksburg!
First stop is, of course, the HFFI Lewis Store at 1200 Caroline Street to pick up Fredericksburg: The Official Guide. Perfect for locals, visitors, and one for yourself. While you’re there, pick up a gift membership for your favorite history-loving friend and maybe a handcrafted pewter holiday ornament for the collector in the family.
What better place to find a truly “Fredericksburg†gift than the Made in Virginia Store at 920 Caroline Street. Delicious fudge, Fredericksburg Wine, and a variety of Fredericksburg collectibles are available in the store and online.
Next stop—the Museum Store at the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center. Filled with beautiful jewelry and chic holiday items, this charming shop gives you the added bonus of knowing you are supporting an institution dedicated to preserving our city’s history.
Need a mid-shopping pick-me-up? Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or latte at Griffin Bookshop and Coffee Bar, 723 Caroline Street, while sitting down with a good book. You’re right—it’s a GREAT book! Ring up a unique card with that purchase and then on to your next stop!
Don’t worry a  bout running out of shopping time this holiday—more than 50 stores will be open until at least 8:00 pm on Friday evenings. Just look for the yellow OPEN LATE flags.
Someone left on the list? That’s simple! Swing by the Fredericksburg Visitors Center, 706 Caroline Street, or LibertyTown Arts Center, 916 Liberty Street, to pick up an Experience Fredericksburg Gift Card. Accepted at more than 70 stores in downtown, these gift cards let the recipient chose his or her gift or delicious meal from many downtown establishments.

Candlelight Tour Tickets Now on Sale!
Tickets for the 2014 Candlelight Tour are now on sale! Save by purchasing yours in advance here.
This year’s tour, held on Saturday and Sunday, December 13–14, includes another amazing lineup of historic homes. Don’t miss your chance to learn about their history, see inside these gorgeous homes, and enjoy the beautiful holiday decorations!
The featured neighborhood this year is the area of Upper Caroline Street and includes homes never before seen on the Candlelight Tour. Victorian jewels as well as rare 18th-century buildings will be on the tour, showing the evolution and longevity of this historic neighborhood. Pick up a copy of the winter edition of the Fredericksburg Guidebook or the December Front Porch to get a taste of what this year’s tour holds.
Daytime and Evening Tour tickets allow guests to visit the homes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. In addition, Evening Tour ticket holders can view the homes Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and attend the Saturday night cocktail party at the Kenmore Inn. Delicious hors d’oeuvres and two drinks are included with admission to the party. It is sure to be a delightful evening and a wonderful addition to your holiday calendar!

Southeast High Speed Rail Study
This week, the Free Lance-Star ran an article about the Southeast High Speed Rail that could make its way from Washington, DC, to Richmond, VA, in the near future. Which brings us to ask, what does this mean for our nearby historic resources? Go online to check out the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation's informative website to see details on the federal study project, learn about the plans, see maps of the project area, and submit your comments.
Construction of the rail line would affect the current rail lines as well as bridges over the Rappahannock River. The period for public comment closes on Friday, December 5, so please to take a moment and let them know what you think is important.
Hopefully, the plan can be carried out with sensitivity to our natural and cultural resources so we can all enjoy faster trips that avoid I-95!
