Dear Friends:

With the Thanksgiving holiday almost here, we are reminded of the importance of community and serving others. At Guttman, we just observed one of our young College’s traditions--the Fall Fest. Guttman faculty and staff honored students for their hard work by providing them with a buffet lunch. The potluck lunch celebrates our College’s wonderful diversity and serves as a fitting tribute to CUNY Month. In the CUNY spirit of giving back to the community, students also wrote holiday cards to send to U.S. military personnel stationed abroad and to New York’s needy and supported a College-wide canned food drive.

Another Guttman tradition we observed last month was Community Days. Guttman first-year students “gave back” to New York City on October 28 and 29 by engaging in community-based service related to what they are learning in the City Seminar course. Students participated in a variety of activities, including repacking donated food at the New York Food Bank in Hunts Point, winterizing gardens in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and Youth Farm, exploring gentrification in Astoria and Crown Point, shopping for seniors in West Harlem, and assisting with recycling and composting at the Lower East Side Ecology Center. Continuing students’ tours of five prospective senior colleges were complemented by a service activity or civic engagement and leadership event with students from these four-year colleges.

As we head toward the end of the Fall I session, we look forward to celebrating the achievements of students from our inaugural class who will complete their associate degrees in two-and-a-half years and move on to four-year colleges or embark on their careers. Their hard work inspires everything we do at Guttman.

Best wishes,

Scott
