Go See Live Music!

Did you ever have one of those challenging weeks where thing after thing seems to take twice as long as you expected?  Such has been this week for your humble correspondent.

Nonetheless, there is much to be thankful for as we approach the official United States holiday of gratitude.  This weekend the esteemed Rocky Mountain Highway Board of Directors will engage in some strategic planning with the generous assistance of the Center for Creative Leadership, and we are confident that great things lie just around the corner.

For this week, though, we are going to keep it short and simple with ten great concerts for you to check out:

1.  The Union Suits, Front Range Barbeque, Wed, Nov 19 (7:30 pm, free).  We aren't sure whether the name refers to organized labor litigation, civil war uniforms, or something completely different, but expect another great night of Americana music on the west side.

2.   Michael Martin Murphey, Stargazers Theatre, Fri Nov 21 (8 pm, $35 adv, $42 day of show, $75 VIP).  It just wouldn't be the holidays without MMM's Cowboy Christmas - although in our opinion it is a wee bit early to start decking the halls.  He'll reprise the show on Sunday at Stargazers with a special military and first responder discount.

3.  The Dustbowl Revival, The Loft, Wed Nov 19 (8 pm, $12 adv, $15 day of show).  Voted Best Live Band in L.A. by LA Weekly in 2013, the audience will be dancin' to the music of this fun roots collective from Venice, CA.

4.  The Whale Tales, Kinfolks (Manitou Springs), Fri Nov 21 (8 pm, free).  Join the kick off party and send this Colorado band, which features former Broken Spoker Josh DeSmidt - on a tour of Midwest bars in style.

5.  Wayne & Arthetta Long with Carmen Anthony Sacco and Barry's Back Porch, Cowboy Church of Peyton, Fri Nov 21 ($5 public, $3 BGAS members, kids < 16 free).  Old-timey Guitar and autoharp goodness with the Buffalo Grass Acoustic Society

6.  Mollie O'Brien & Rich Moore, Western Jubilee Warehouse, Fri Nov 21 (7:30 pm, $25).  Following a well-received MeadowGrass performance in 2013, Mollie and Rich are back in the Springs touring in support of a new album, Love Runner.

7.  Fiji with Kontiki, Drew Deezy, Essel, MC Big Boy & DJ LucDog, The Black Sheep, Fri Nov 21 (8 pm, $20 adv, $25 day of show, $35 VIP).  It's not every day that Colorado Springs hosts a Pacific Islander Thanksgiving Bash, headlined by Fiji (the artist, as opposed to the Republic of Fiji, the island country), who was born George Brooks Veikoso.

8.  Edith Makes a Paper Chain, Front Range Barbeque, Sat Nov 22 (7:30 pm, free).  Still riding the waves on the strength of the latest album ThereThereThere, Sarah Hope & Co. return to the FRBBQ stage for a night of indie folk.

9.  Jason Jackson, Kinfolks (Manitou Springs), Sat Nov 22 (8 pm, free).  You may know him from his days playing dobro and singing with the J. Miller Band, but Jason Jackson will show you that he is a singer-songwriter and guitarist in his own right.

10.  Michael Reese & Friends, Jack Quinn's Pub, Wed Nov 19 (8 pm, free).  No word on who the friends might be, but Michael is a legendary local guitarist so you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for "tuning in" and please check out the Pikes Peak Concert Calendar for more roots concert listings.
