Just look at the array of free events we have programmed for you over the next few weeks!

There's got to be something amongst this lot that will take your fancy and have you climbing those rickety old stairs one last time, before we close our doors on 21st December in preparation for major refurbishment in early 2015.

SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER
MEET & EAT

11.30AM . £5 . INC LIGHT BUFFET LUNCH
LIMITED SPACES . BOOKING ESSENTIAL

An opportunity to meet and discuss the work of acclaimed, award-winning residency artist photographer Alastair Cook over a bite to eat.

The event will begin in Side Cinema, where Alastair will give a presentation of his work, followed by a move to Side Gallery (next door), where we will provide a light buffet lunch and the opportunity to view a selection of his glass plates and continued discussion.

Alastair Cook works principally as a photographer concentrating on antique technologies and as a filmmaker combining digital video and hand-developed film-stock. He is the founder of 'Documenting Britain', driven by his desire to document the archipelago that is the British Isles; he is also the founding director of film and poetry project Filmpoem, now an international film festival. Alastair is currently the artist in residence for Kaunas Photography Gallery in Lithuania, representing Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow.

"Arresting and nostalgic, contemplative and intriguing…Cook’s portraits create their own atmosphere and intrigue.” Giles Sutherland, The Times ****

“Alastair Cook’s short films are beautiful.” Joyce McMillan The Scotsman ****

BIEN DE CHEZ NOUS (ONE OF US)
(Henri de Latour, 85 mins, 2014, English subtitles)

3PM . FREE . LIMITED SPACES . BOOKING ESSENTIAL

An introduced screening & discussion with the director and with cast & production team members.

A film about a small French town and its response when a refugee member of the community is threatened with deportation... Rich in the music and the detail of the town’s life and concerns, this extraordinary, participative, feature length drama has been made with the people of Lasalle in the Cevennes. Director Henri de Latour is Lasalle’s mayor; the film’s actors and production team members were drawn from among its inhabitants into a production process of over a year.

A tradition of welcoming dissidents and refugees in their part of the Cevennes goes back to the C18th. More recently, Lasalle and its neighbours gave sanctuary to Afghan ‘sans papiers’ (asylum seekers). Offering no easy solutions and drawing on the community’s own experiences, a film about coming together has also worked to bring the town itself together.

The photo book is often seen as a desirable but pricey luxury item beyond the budgets of many, so we have selected 15 of the best documentary photography books published in 2014 and will be making them available for everyone to enjoy, for free, every day that we are open for a full week.

In an age when so many of us experience photography almost exclusively on digital screens, these beautifully produced publications, from publishers large and small, proudly embrace the power of print and keep the brilliant tradition of the photobook very much alive.
