I love the word “Beyond.” (Read the whole poem)
The more I think of it, the clearer the image I get of freedom, open skies, and unlimited possibility. Beyond the self- imposed structures and habits we believe we need to function, is a quiet, yet energetic place. This place within exists beyond what we think we should be doing, to be found simply in enjoying what we are doing.
I have just finished writing my next book Beyond Finding Freedom and Meaning in the Every Day, it is based on a poem I wrote after spending an evening with my brother, and asked myself what was beyond some of the ideas and words we take for granted.
Are some words more meaningful? Better able to describe our world and how we live? Do they help us succeed in life? As I began listing out the words, about forty in all, I realized this was not just the intellectual exercise I thought it was at all. It began to describe for me another way of actually experiencing the simple pleasures life has to offer. I began seeing how sometimes words are incomplete to fully describe what is going on. That incompleteness traps us, limits us. That when you move beyond the accepted word to the next evolution of that word, the world actually makes even more sense. You begin to see nuances and subtleties in life that before were perhaps only occasionally experienced. Freedom becomes possible. Meaning clearer.

"Beyond" theme in Movies
The message of beyond is one I challenge my clients on regularly. They work with me because they want to move beyond to another level in their life and organization. The Movie Industry also brings this message.
My wife (Joanne) and I now find our lives allow us to get out once again to movies. Though finding one we both want to see can be a challenge, every once in a while some come along which meet our joint criteria: a dramatic story line, visually stunning, touching, and hopefully with moments of humour. And for me, if the protagonist goes on a journey of self development - BONUS!
Hector and the Search for Happiness was one such movie.which met this bill.
It created for Joanne and I the opportunity to reflect on our own state of happiness and past events. One question in the movie was to think of a happy moment in your youth, Joanne immediately identified the feeling of being on a swing.
A more powerful question might be, what brings us joy? Now that is where the real game is played. Joy bursts forth, hits us at such a deep level we feel our bodies sing and stretch for the heavens.
Cheers,
Jonathan Creaghan
