Hiring a Veteran
Monday HR Minute
November 17, 2014

Did you know that 77% of veterans have struggled through unemployment and more than a quarter have searched for more than a year for a job, according to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America?  The official unemployment rate for veterans is 7%, compared with 5.8% for the American workforce as a whole.  In addition, 23% of employed veterans said they are now underemployed or in a low-paying job, according to CareerBuilder.

Fortunately, employers are increasingly looking to the veteran labor pool for talent and those efforts are well rewarded.  According to a Career Builder survey, employers benefit from hiring vets for the following reasons:
  • Ability to work as a team: 62%
  • Disciplined approach to work: 62%
  • Respect and integrity: 58%
  • Ability to perform under pressure: 52%
  • Leadership skills: 50%
  • Problem solving skills: 45%
  • Ability to adapt quickly: 44%
  • Attitude of perseverance: 43%
  • Communication skills: 36%
  • Strong technical skills: 30%
As you think about your talent needs, remember that many of the job components can be taught – but teaching leadership, problem-solving and discipline is not so easy.  So the next time you recruit for talent, consider hiring a veteran.  Here are some great resources for employers looking to fill jobs with veterans:
