Sponsorship Report
By Melanie Fannin
As always, October proved to be busy, yet fairly relaxed as well, largely because we were not collecting grades and had distributed most of the school uniforms in August. The few children who had not received uniforms in August were able to claim their uniforms and, along with the other children, a winter coat purchased by our resident angel Claudia. The coat distribution was moved to October because last year, when we gave out coats in December, the cold winter winds were already blowing.
Additionally, we awarded scholarships to assist three of our college students in paying tuition and purchasing books. Four students applied for a scholarship by completing formal applications that were judged by three Spanish speakers, giving particular weight to an essay regarding the importance of education to the student and the student's family.
Finally, we processed eleven new students into the program. But, even though we added those students to the sponsorship rolls, an equal number were added to the wait list for future consideration. There is no shortage of families seeking to be a part of the sponsorship program. Our goal is to satisfy that demand. Please join us in this endeavor and renew your sponsorship(s) or become a first time sponsor. A needy child would attend school with the proper uniform and school supplies as a result of your generosity. What a special gift both to the child and yourself this coming holiday season!
