The 2014 Ellie Awards - Saturday Dec 6th - Save the Date!

Greetings Editors,

CONGRATULATIONS to all Ellie nominee’s this year.

http://www.screeneditors.com.au/awards/

The ninth annual ASE ‘Ellie’ Awards, to be hosted by the multi talented actor/director and writer Leah Purcell, will take place on Saturday the 6th of December 2014 at the Paddington RSL in Sydney. In addition to the winners of the eleven award categories, the Guild will also honour a Lifetime member along with a new Accredited member. Our special guest this year is Gillian Armstrong.

Introducing our new GOLD award sponsor Shine Australia.

Shine Australia was formed in January 2010 to produce premium scripted and unscripted content. Shine Australia’s slate consists of shows such as The Voice, MasterChef, The Biggest Loser, Australia’s Next Top Model, Beauty And The Geek, Aussie Pickers and Location, Location, Location. Shine expanded into scripted drama in 2014 with a handful of new commissions – the first of these being the Seven Network mini series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. The show was edited by Rodrigo Balart.

Shine Australia will be presenting the award for Best Editing in a Short Film.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the awards — tickets are now on sale.

The Little Death followed by a discussion with editor Christian Gazal was screened at AFTRS last month with a strong turnout. Christian’s brilliant insight into the post-production process and the film itself, a sharp well crafted comedy were an audience hit.

Warmest thanks to Christian for his time, to Jane St Vincent Welch ASE for hosting, to Gwen Sputore for her organisational skills and to all the Exec committee who gave their energy.

A huge huge thank you to Audio Network who attended and provided wine and starters and a short talk before the event!

Remember, it really is a matter of “what can you do for your Guild?”. Please let us know what you’d like to contribute or make available to share.

Regards,
Dany Cooper ASE
ASE President

EVENT REPORT

Q & A With Editor Christian Gazal for The Little Death

Christian Gazal (third from right) with ASE President Dany Cooper (end right), ASE committee member Jane St Vincent Welch (end left) and our fabulous sponsors from Audio Network.

When Christian first met the Director of The Little Death, Josh Lawson, they shared the same kind of thinking about intercutting the stories. Originally in the script the stories weren’t intertwined - they were written separately. Each of the five separate stories, with an individual beginning, middle and end, which all had such different energy levels.

In order to balance the different energy levels of each story, they were first cut independently before the initial intercut. The trick was not to over intercut the stories of the seemingly unrelated people. The theme was the only thing that connected each story, and Christian found that introducing only three stories first out of the full five, was enough to begin with. Through the use of different colour-coded scene cards different story orders were tried, but ultimately Christian and Josh settled to begin with Maeve and Paul’s story because it was the strangest and best established the theme: if you are truthful and honest then maybe it will all turn out okay. The Director wanted to keep the shock at the end of the film, leaving the question: was the biscuit man really that bad of a guy? He was also the common connection through each of the characters throughout the film.

MEET THE SPONSOR

Meet The Sponsor: Audio Network

Who is Audio Network?

The intention to distinguish Audio Network from other traditional music libraries was to deliver a product with depth and quality, and build that product from scratch. Audio Network have always been incredibly lucky to be surrounded by a group of people, who along with being very talented and respected in their own right, have committed themselves to the idea of building the best and most diverse catalogue of production music in the world.

The first to embrace the idea were Jazz legends Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, rapidly joined by other composer luminaries including Dame Evelyn Glennie, Terry Devine-King, Chris Blackwell and Paul Mottram. Every single composer on the initial hit list joined in and their commitment and enthusiasm encouraged the all-important financiers to invest. The idea became a reality in July 2001 & Audio Network was born.

In the last decade we’ve seen a fundamental shift in the way content is created and distributed. This has meant that the music rights have had to be held centrally, allowing the music to be licensed without the usual restrictions. Removing barriers for people who use our music such as producers, editors, and content creators gives them the creative freedom to use as much quality music as they desire.

We’re growing our team internationally, we now have a dedicated A&R team who are always on the prowl for the next Audio Network talent. Building the size of our library isn’t the only touchstone we’re interested in achieving. We are also endeavouring to diversify it. We’ve recently commissioned artist James Burgess who creates soundscapes with sounds such as household products and is one of many new composers to recently join Audio Network, in our efforts to provide a plethora of musical genres and sonic tools. We also have a solid undiscovered program and we’re extending our composer circles in Australia, having just landed artists such as Braden Evans.

What’s next on the cards for Audio Network? You’ll have to log on and see.

ON THE WEB

I've fallen, and I can't get up

You can do amazing stuff when you have time on your hands. Dave Fothergill did this hypnotic video of CGI people falling over and over as they get swept around by a swinging metal fence. It will be hard to stop watching.

EXTENDING A HELPING HAND

The Motion Picture Industry Benevolent Society (MPIBS) is the film industry’s very own charity, helping colleagues who work or have worked in film production, cinema exhibition and distribution.

We recently contacted some of our recipients and asked them to tell their stories. Here are just a couple:

“After working in the film industry for over 20 years in both costume and art department, I developed breast cancer followed by severe arthritis in my hands that required several lots of surgery and made constant sewing difficult. I had to stop working and consequently had difficulty making ends meet. I was unaware of MPIBS until someone passed on my name and I was contacted, reviewed and given a monthly relief payment to help with living expenses. This has enabled me to maintain a modest lifestyle that would otherwise be very difficult. I'm immensely grateful for this generous support.”
(Sylvia*, Freelancer, Costume/Art Department)

“As a senior who doesn’t qualify yet for the old age pension, MPIBS support is allowing me to regroup. My financial difficulties arose because of serious health problems and the need to pay for expensive medications. While I'm not yet out of the woods, I am eternally grateful to the MPIBS for its assistance.”
(Martin*, Writer/Producer/Director)

* Due to the stringent confidentiality requirements of the MPIBS, names have been changed.

The MPIBS is a safety net which enables our colleagues to be cared for when they need it most but we need your help to continue our work.
