Dress for the Weather
Whenever possible we will be going outside for recess.  Please send your children prepared for the colder, wetter weather.  Umbrellas and toys are not permitted at recess time.  Please make sure your child realizes that the umbrella or toys that they bring to school needs to stay in their cubby/backpack until the end of the day.  As you add extra layers of clothing for your child please remember to label all items including gloves, hats and coats.
Lost and Found
We have an amazing amount of clothes in the Lost and Found.  All of these items will be donated after the Thanksgiving Break.  Please check the lost and found during conferences.
Office Notes
Thank you all for using attendance@lawtonelementary.com to communicate information regarding drop-off, pick-up and attendance related issues.
Nurse Notes
Please be advised that we have a few outbreaks of lice in the lower and upper grades.  Please make a habit of checking your child’s head regularly.  A tummy virus is circulating in the lower grades so please make sure to wash hands and keep your student home if they are not feeling well.

Friday is the First Lawton Community Playground Meeting
Bring your family and neighbors to Lawton Elementary School for a chance to give your input on the design for the Lawton Community Playground.  We will be meeting in the Commons from 6-7:30pm on Friday.  Come engage in a discussion to modernize the playground and redesign the surrounding space to create an inviting, physically, and intellectually stimulating, inclusive and safe environment for all our students and all community members.  This is the first in a series of community workshops to gather input from the community.  If you have questions or want to be more involved in this effort, send an email to Amy Tucci Webert.  Feel free to pass along the information regarding our first meeting with the flyer and also like the Facebook page.  This project is funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award from the City of Seattle, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
Lawton Playground Design - Make It Awesome
We launched a “Lawton’s Playground Design - Make it Awesome” this week.  We want to get ideas from the Lawton students.  Your child should be bringing home sometime this week a flyer and art page to design the playground. It can be drawings with labels, glued photographs, just drawings, just words…..anything that works for your child.  The team will be submitting these to our design firm to consider when drafting proposals for the new Lawton community playground.  In addition we will be displaying the submissions at the January PTA General Membership Meeting.  Teachers may be including these with homework or just sending home sometime this week. In case you need another copy (we know how things get lost easily in transport), we have attached it here.  Design and be innovative!  Let your creative juices flow!  All playground design forms are due back to the school by December 1st but some teachers are requesting them before the Thanksgiving break so they don’t get forgotten in the turkey excitement!
Last Call!  Fall Food & Grocery Gift Card Drive
If you've been meaning to make a donation to assist Lawton families in need this Thanksgiving, PLEASE HURRY!  The food drive ends TODAY.  Your student can deliver non-perishable foods to school this morning or you may drop off your contribution throughout the day in the bins located in the school foyer.  GROCERY GIFT CARDS (or CASH DONATIONS to purchase gift cards) for Thanksgiving will be collected through tomorrow, Tuesday, November 18th. (For cash donations, please make checks payable to "Lawton PTA" and write "outreach" on the memo line.)  Place your gift card/cash contribution in an envelope for "Laura Thomas" and send it to school with your child or bring it to the school office.  All contributions help families right here at Lawton. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY!  Questions?  Please contact PTA Outreach Coordinator, Meagan Green.

More Outreach Opportunities for the Winter Holidays
We will also need your support to make Lawton's winter holiday outreach efforts a success.  Ways to help include donations of grocery gift cards, holidays gifts and cash contributions (with checks made payable to "Lawton PTA" with "outreach" on the memo line).  Gift cards/cash contributions can be dropped off in the school office or your student can bring it to school in an envelope for "Laura Thomas."  If you're interested in donating holiday gifts, please contact Alice Shepard (PTA Outreach Coordinator) at ambshepard@yahoo.  All contributions to assist Lawton families in need for the winter holidays are due by Monday, December 15th. THANK YOU!  Questions?  Please contact PTA Outreach Coordinator, Alice Shepard.
Register now for Afterschool Enrichment Classes
There have been many questions regarding the next registration period for our PTA sponsored Enrichment classes. We'd like to clarify all this information for you. Most of our classes have two longer sessions and the next registration period for these classes will happen in January after we get back from Winter break with classes starting in February.
  Several of our other classes have 2-4 shorter sessions and registration for the next session was supposed to happen in September.  These classes will start their next session in January upon coming back from Winter Break.  If you'd like to register for these classes, registration is happening now. You can find the information for each of the classes on the attached PDF.
Classes include:

  *   Art Adventures
  *   Creative Coding (Wednesday)

Volunteer at Lawton - We Need Your Time & Talent

We can also match your interest and time constraints with needs!  All volunteers must meet School District requirements.

Class Art Project
One of the fun fundraising projects we do each year is a class art project, which the children have a hand in making.  This piece of art is then auctioned off at our Spring Gala party on April 25th.  We have made some changes to make this process easier for the volunteers and are hoping to get an early start so there is no time pressure.  We would like all projects to be completed by March 31st.  We are hoping for 1-2 parents from each classroom to help organize and execute this project.   The volunteers will coordinate with the classroom teacher regarding ideas and scheduling time to work with the kids.  There are lots of classroom art project ideas online.  Class projects can be 2D or 3D.  We would like ideas submitted to us by Monday, December 3rd and we will purchase all art supplies for you.  I am happy to work with anyone who has questions or needs help with an idea.  We will also frame the 2D art to make the process simpler for you.
Some ideas for projects are:  2D art in a variety of mediums, ceramic bowls, quilt/blanket, bench, etc.  Please feel free to contact Laura Van Horne with any questions.  If you are interested in helping with this, please contact your classroom teacher or room parent.
