CHASE Bulletin                                                      December 2014

Welcome to the first CHASE Bulletin. Here you will find important information and key dates as well as news, events and call for papers. There is also the opportunity for students to contribute, or share events that other CHASE students may be interested in.

Contributions are welcomed up to the 28th of each month, with the bulletin being circulated in the first week of the following month.

The AHRC International Placement Scheme

A fantastic opportunity to study at a prestigious international organisation, strengthen your academic record and broaden your horizons. Opportunities are available with a range of organisations. Deadline for applications is 16.00 on Thursday 15/01/2015 to do a placement in your second year. Student Profiles

We're working on getting all CHASE student profiles featured on both the Virtual Research Environment (VRE) and on the CHASE website. Once you have filled in your VRE profile, the text will then be used to create your online profile on the external CHASE website.

There will be an opportunity to review your profile text before it goes live and to send a profile picture, if you don't have one already.
Training

The Open University Training modules are designed to teach you about a key aspect related to being a research student. Topics within themes can be studied as a sequence or independently.

Modules include staring and organising your research, information on professional conduct and research methodologies.

Open Days
  • Open Day for Doctoral Students at the British Library

    The Art & Design Open Day event will take place on 6 February 2015

    Students are welcome to attend any other British Library Open Days if they feel it is relevant to their area of research.

    From the British Library website: 'Students will learn about our collections, find out how to access them, and meet our     expert staff as well as other researchers in their field. In addition to an understanding of the Library’s collections, the students gain a wider introduction to the information landscape in their field and research opportunities opening up in digital information environment. Numbers are limited and, as these events are very popular, we do encourage early booking. Places cost £5.00 and this includes lunch.

Starting to think about a placement?
 

A good first step is to visit the workspace of a potential placement provider, meet their staff and start talking about projects you could work together on. Intel Labs and BUFVC, strategic CHASE partners, have both offered to welcome CHASE students to their offices for the afternoon.

There will be many other organisations delighted to welcome you in this way.

If you would like to look at arranging to visit any potential placement provider, contact the CHASE Placements and Partnerships Officer: Steven.Colburn@chase.ac.uk

Don’t forget: your stipend will be extended if your placement project is approved, so your placement does not need to directly relate to your PhD research. Keep checking the bulletin each month for details of new placement opportunities, available throughout your PhD.
 

Events

  • Various dates - Travellers’ Tails seminars at The Queen’s House, Greenwich
    Tickets £8 / £6 concession

    Evening seminars with a limited number of places and a glass of wine, the Travellers’ Tails series examines key questions around the history of art, science and exploration, drawing on George Stubbs’s ‘Kangaroo’ and ‘Dingo’ paintings recently acquired by the Royal Museums Greenwich. Artists, scientists, explorers and museum professionals will consider the nature of 18th-century exploration and how these histories can be experienced in a modern museum setting.

Calls for papers

  • Workers of all lands unite? Working-class nationalism and internationalism until 1945

    7th March 2015, University of Nottingham

    Postgraduates, early career historians and those outside of full-time academia are invited to submit proposals for papers (of about 20-30 minute’s length) by the 7th January 2015. Please e-mail abstracts of no more than 300 words to workersuniteconf2015@gmail.com. Abstracts should include your name, institution and/or organization, email address, and the title of your proposed paper.

  • Money Talks: Inequality and North American Identity - 49th Parallel Interdisciplinary Postgraduate and ECR Conference

    University of Nottingham, Friday 19th June 2015

    The deadline for submitting abstracts is the 12th of January 2015. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and should include an additional biography of no more than 75 words. Please e-mail proposals to editors@49thparalleljournal.org. Registration for the conference is £15. Travel and accommodation costs will not be covered.

  • Women, law and disorder - Call for Papers

    Queen’s University Belfast, 6th-7th March 2015

    Abstracts of 200-300 words for a 20 minute paper should be submitted by 31st January 2015 along with the proposed title, a short bibliography (100 words max.) and contact details to Eliza McKee at iwdconference2015@gmail.com.
